TURN UP THE FUN! is an upbeat, 14-song roller coaster ride through the witty and whimsical mind of Ron Romanovsky, formerly of the duo Romanovsky & Phillips, who released 6 albums and toured the US, Canada and Australia from 1983 to 1999. On this lively and very engaging disc, Romanovsky returns to his queer music roots and has much to say.
Highlights include: "The Day the Homos Disappear", a klezmer-flavored glance at a world that the religious right would like us all to live in, "The Sanctity of Marriage", an unapologetically sarcastic response to the so-called "Defense of Marriage" Act, and the irresistible "Anti-Depressant Polka", which promises that polka is better than Prozac. On the more poignant, but still tongue-in-cheek side is a portrait of three different non-traditional methods of conception in "The Alternative Parenting Song", and a stab at military [un]consciousness in the surprisingly light-hearted "Fighting for Peace (is like screwing for virginity)."
In the middle of all this food for thought is the title track, a haunting duet written for violin and accordion with a decidedly gypsy flair. Several other thoughtful ballads round out the album which is made very listenable with uncluttered arrangements and solid musical support from Romanovsky's back-up band: Phil Scollard (drums), Hilary Schacht (violin), John Boucher (bass) and Brandy Herbert (electric guitar).
