Biography
Originally from Senegal, Cheikh’s fascination with the diverse, rich sounds and rhythms of the local music scene started in his prime age. Early in his life Cheikh played the piano, and was attracted to many jazz greats.
However, after listening to Weather Report ‘s 8:30 album, he was so captivated by Jaco Pastorius melodic and harmonic developments that he immediately fell in love with the bass guitar.
Therefore after four years of playing the piano, Cheikh picked up his first bass guitar as age 14. Years later, he secured his first professional gig with a jazz band, in Dakar – Senegal, named Opus. The band had its first national exposure at the notable St Louis Jazz Festival in which appeared great jazz musicians such as Pharaoh Sanders, Jack Dejohnette, Herbie Hancock, and many others.
Cheikh's transition from the Senegalese to the U.S. music scene was pretty smooth given his broad musical exposure. He has broken onto the U.S. scene with his first CD “A Child’s Tale” produced by Romero Wyatt (Drumtalk39 LLC…). This debut Album features such Greats as Russell Ferrante , Eric Marienthal, Dave Weckl, Randy Brecker, Dean Brown , Karen Briggs, Mike Miller.
Known as a "Richard Bona protégé", (quite a reputation to uphold) he demonstrates on this first effort tremendous potential in quite a few directions. Being an accomplished composer as well as a player, he represents yet another brilliant member of this young generation of musicians shaping the scene nowadays. With a surprisingly defined maturity to his playing, coupled with his great sense of melody, Cheikh will without a doubt be a familiar voice on the scene. His Debut Album ”A Child’s Tale” will be performed with The Band “Siguil” which was founded by he and Producer / Percussionist Romero Wyatt in Early 2008.
