How does a guy from Brooklyn, New York now living in rainy Portland, Oregon write such poignant and hopeful songs? First he falls in love with Miles Davis and Bill Evans. Then he has a lengthy affair with the most sensual of mistresses-bossa nova. All the while he has been involved with singer/songwriter/guitarist Bruce Cockburn. Finally the music of Ronnie Robins is born. On his debut CD "bossamba" you can hear him sing in a scat-like style he calls "portutease," imitating the sounds of Portguese. His rhythmic, sophisticated finger-style guitar is the perfect complement to his friendly, almost familiar voice. But most of the songs are in English, displaying Robins' tender wit and intelligence. He is accompanied by a cornucopia of percussion, flute, saxophone, bass and even pedal steel guitar on the inspirational ballad "Someday." You can't help noticing the references to rain in the song titles and perhaps it is the rain that kept Ronnie Robins indoors where he has crafted a gorgeous recording.
Thanks for reviewing this album! You should see it show up on the album page in a few days.
I met Ronnie yesterday (12/12/10) at the Woodstock library as he was playing Brazilian style music and I was quite impressed. He's a very talented and soulful musician and I loved his style of music. I;m hoping to connect him with my BIL, another talented guitar player, who I think would be a great practice buddy to know. The CD, entitled "bossamba" is very nice, mellow and reminds me of one summer in Maui, as I drove from Wailuku to Lahaina, along the cliffs, with the sunroof open and the wonderful feeling of sand, surf and sun enveloping me. It's not my "happy place" for yoga. Thanks, Ronnie. Read more...
