The Room 217 Story

Music has the capacity to elicit response, provide connection, support healing and offer transcendence. Its flexibility and structure make it a valuable means of therapeutic intervention. With an aging population, music becomes an accessible and affordable means of care and one that brings pleasure to both the care giver and care receiver. Since 2005, the music of Room 217 has been a peaceful presence in the lives of thousands of people. Room 217 began out of a need for beautiful and hopeful music that would gently accompany people going through transitions due to illness or other kinds of losses.

Room 217 resources are used in a variety of ways. The most common uses include:
• Wellbeing
• Caregiving
• Therapeutic intervention
• Spiritual enrichment
• Atmosphere
• Alzheimer’s and dementia care
• End of life and after care
• Recreation and leisure
• Baby care

The creation of the Room 217 Foundation in 2009 is a very natural next step in the unfolding story as it allows our vision for music and care to grow.


Room 217 Foundation Mission: caring for the whole person with music

The Room 217 Foundation will raise and steward funds to provide comforting support to those in life limiting situations and their caregivers by:
- producing distinctive music care resources
- training frontline care providers in the use of music as a means of care
- promoting creative research in music and care

They also have a program called Code Lavender where they provide support to staff at the hospital that are having a difficult time i.e. when a department staff member has died or when a unit has had multiple patient deaths and/or stressors in a short period of time. The Code Lavender team is activated, and they go to the unit offering free Reiki, massage, prayer, healthy snacks, support, and various other things to staff. Again the Room 217 CDs are often played in the background during these support sessions!
