Roots Foundation have been lighting up stages in Southern California since 1996, with their unique and energetic style of reggae, reggae rock, and world music, both as headliners, and as the exclusively selected opening act for Bunny Wailer, the Abyssinians, the Wailing Souls, the Melodians, and others.
Bandleader/songwriter/guitarist Kurt Mahoney has been actively involved in the reggae scene since 1982, working with Joe Higgs, Ras Michael, Fully Fullwood and more, while simultaneously fronting Eyes of the World (1987-1991), then booking agent/guitarist and co-vocalist with Mo Dn Irie (1992-1995) before forming Roots. In addition, Kurt has kept an active solo singer/songwriter career moving (latest release Where The Heart Is..), as well as fronting the Blue Rose Band (latest release Phantom Train), a jazz group, and an afro/brazil/Caribbean acoustic group.
Roots Foundation incorporate influences that have penetrated Kurt\'s heart and soul, ranging from the classic reggae artists of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, along with artists as diverse as The Grateful Dead, King Sunny Ade’,The Beatles, and Bob Dylan, blending it together with deep grooves, strong melodies, meaningful lyrics, striking harmonies, soulful sax, and Kurt’s signature steel guitar to create a sound unmistakably their own!
With the eleven song tour de force Conscious Revolution (featuring guest spots by reggae luminaries Santa Davis and Ras Michael), Roots Foundation now add a new classic to reggae\'s ever-expanding universe!
From the uplifting (Trace Of Sadness, Sacred Ground, Let It Grow), and the social/political (Turn Away, Hemp Nation, and the title track), to the universal (Teach Us How To Love, All Around The World), and the downright epic (Never Get Away) and more, Conscious Revolution takes you on a journey you\'ll want to repeat again and again!

Uplifting & optimistic reggae-infused music
author: Joe Ross
Love, compassion, peace and understanding .... this uplifting and optimistic reggae-infused music is largely the brainchild of talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Kurt Mahoney. He and the other musicians demonstrate good familiarity with the danceable genre, and it may partly be because of Mahoney's experience and involvement with the reggae scene since the early 1980s. His own clarion guitars and succinct vocals wrap nicely around solid arrangements that feature tasty saxophone and more. I hear sensitivity, spirit and inspiration in Roots Foundation's music, and that's a necessity for successful reggae and world music. More would've been even better. Mahoney's an eclectic California-based musician with considerable moxie, and he also has well-balanced albums out that fit more into the acoustic original Americana ("Where the Heart is") and electric country ("Phantom Train") realms too.
