Rose Cousins...If You Were For Me (2006)

Drawing on influences from traditions of folk, bluegrass, pop and Appalachian music, the highly anticipated full-length release by Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Rose Cousins promises to earn her the widespread acclaim that she deserves.

Entitled If You Were for Me, the album was recorded at Halifax’s legendary Studio H by ECMA- award winning producer Karl Falkenham. This collection of eleven original songs is Rose’s strongest effort to date, and is supported by a cast of some of the finest musicians on the East Coast, including Dave Burton on drums and piano, Jamie Gatti on bass and Ray Legere on mandolin and violin.

With a keen eye for observation, and a genuine sense of wonder, Rose weaves together imagery borrowed from her upbringing on a farm in PEI, with a strong wealth of wisdom. At times joyful, at times sorrowful, If You Were For Me expressly captures the plight of the lonely heart, on a profound journey. Delivered with a pure and unaffected voice, the listener can’t help but be drawn in to her expertly crafted songs, emotionally intelligent lyrics and simple and infectious melodies.

Her two previous independent releases (Only So Long 2002, Miles to Go 2003) earned Cousins a reputation as one the most promising singer/songwriters in Halifax, as well as a solid footing in the New England folk circuit. Blessed with a natural wit and charm, Rose’s live performances are the perfect counterpart to the honest beauty of her songs: she will have the audience barreled over with laughter one minute, and reaching for a tissue the next. As the Boston Globe writes, “It's no wonder Cousins is the object of audience affection....”

She has had the good fortune to share stages with some very prominent artists on both sides of the border, including Canadian greats David Francey, Lynn Miles, Joel Plaskett, Bob Snider, Emm Gryner & Valdy and U.S. friends John Gorka, Darrell Scott, Edie Carey, Rose Polenzani, Meg Hutchinson, Mark Erelli, & The Weepies.

She has also lent her voice to recordings by artists such as Matt Mays, Jill Barber, In-Flight Safety, The Heavy Blinkers and Edie Carey.

This album marks the first release by Rose’s own Old Farm Pony records, a label that she hopes will develop into a future home for artists in the years to come.

    When it comes to singer/songwriters, Canada's ladies are light-years ahead of the rest of the world, and Rose Cousins has just increased the margin by an order of magnitude. She instantly caught my attention when I heard four of her songs on MySpace, and now that I have purchased the CD and listened to it, those four songs were no fluke. Refreshingly simple and yet of great depth and texture. Wonderful.

    It´s the 2nd time I cried from music this year (2007, & the other one was when Paul Potts stepped up to the 1st audition at BGT this year). Rose´s voice cuts through me like a knife through melting butter. "If You Were for Me" and "Simple Thought", among others, are songs for eternity! I bought the CD, then couldn´t wait for it to ship & now got the same through itunes a 2nd time.

    The first time I heard one of Rose's songs was from the If You Were For Me album, on CBC radio while driving to work. Upon hearing her, I was immediately drawn to her music, which is something I can honestly say doesn't happen a whole lot. Rose's music has the ability to reach deep down inside you and tug at your soul. It's hard to put into words....you simply have to listen for yourself!!

    I have such a hard time picking favorite songs on this album. Rose's musicianship is impeccable and the "mix" of the album is sonically interesting. The lyrics speak to her experiences no doubt, but I find they speak to universal themes of intimacy and yearning that I can relate to and hear myself within, which comes in handy when words fail me.

    I bought this CD as a gift for my boyfriend in the Northwest Territories...we had seen Rose perform live at Sessions Café in Rothesay, New Brunswick about a year ago. Chris called the day after he got it to tell me he had listened to it three times that day! He loves it, and is encouraging me to pick up one for myself. Great job, Rose...keep 'em comin'!
