Album Notes

THE SCOOP:
Singer-songwriter, one-man-band Adam Michael Rothberg is new to the Boston area, but not new to the music world. Adam was named one of the 2008 Northeast Regional Finalists in the Mountain Stage NewSong contest.

Berkshire Living’s August 2008 issue calls Adam “the Berkshire’s answer to Paul McCartney….ANOTHER SPIN is at once a testament to Rothberg’s love affair with music and his love affair with love, and suggests that distinguishing between the two isn’t always so easy."

In July 2008, The Boston Weekly Dig had this to say: “He's toured with Joan Baez, produced Dar Williams and performed with the best of the local folk scene, but now it's Rothberg's turn to step out of the folk shadows, and the result, Another Spin, is lyrical poetry and multi-instrumental duty. (He plays the guitar, piano, udu, mandolin, percussion and the Turkish oud!)”

Adam’s clever, bittersweet, and nostalgic lyrics, are showcased on his latest release, “Another Spin” supporting his vocal talents as well as skillful playing on just about every instrument on the CD. As with his first album, “All the Whispering,” Rothberg wrote, performed, produced, and engineered “Another Spin.”

The musical styles on “Another Spin” reflect influences including The Beatles, Randy Newman, Mark Knopfler, Elvis Costello, and Wilco.

Check out cameo performances by singer-songwriter Catie Curtis on two tracks: “Here I Go Again” and “Do You Still Love Me.” Jeff Stevens adds sweet, rich trumpet parts to two tracks: “Seasons Shuffle” and “Gonna Last.”

Since relocating to Cambridge, Massachusetts from the Berkshires (Western Massachusetts) in August 2007, Adam has performed at renowned area venues such as the Lizard Lounge, Club Passim, the Middle East, Bull Run, and Natick Center for the Arts. Meanwhile, he is planning house concerts and CD release parties in Cambridge, the Berkshires, and throughout the region.

THE SHORT VERSION:
Steeped in twenty years singer/songwriter tradition and Beatlesque sensibilities with smart engaging lyrics and stunning musicianship, Rothberg's songs are fast cult favorites among fans of Randy Newman, Michael Penn, Paul Simon, Jeff Tweedy, and Elvis Costello. In Adam Michael Rothberg’s 2001 debut CD, All the Whispering, “there’s ample evidence that [he] could become one of his generation’s best singer-songwriters.” says Rambles Cultural Arts Magazine. His sophomore CD “Another Spin” combines all the elements of Rothberg’s singer/songwriter background with the strong, producer-driven folk and rock influences of the last five decades. He sings, plays guitar, bass, mandolin, oud, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, and more.

The Songs
author: Larry Chernicoff
GONNA LAST: One of the 2 crown jewels of the CD. I love it when musicians are willing to play a tune this slow. The drums are perfect. The trumpet is perfect - I salute Jeff. The slides to the falsetto on "last" are perfect, especially the first one, which is the absolute climax moment of the arc of the tune. I loved this song the first time I heard it and it's only gotten better. I love the long, long, long outro. It just feels so good. Kind of Sting-like. I could just hang in this groove all day. CHET'S BET: was definitely worth it to re-record it. It's placed *just right* in the sequence. Crazy. MOVING DAY: Another mixture of heartfelt emotion that you paint with these careful, minute observations of life details. That makes for fabulous storytelling. That's what you are in some of these songs - a storyteller. Great guitar solo, great guitar sound. LIVE EVERY DAY: This is the other crown jewel. A brilliant song in the lyrics and in the conception. Very Lennonesque. I love the long intro. I would call it Country and Eastern. And YOU DEFINITELY GOT THE OUD THING DOWN!! WITHOUT THE DRUMS: WTF??? Very White Album. Sounds like it just happened in the studio, waiting for the drummer, just off the cuff. YOUR VOICE: Sweet. Pure Paul.

Hometown (Remember You)
author: Jim Abel
It took just a few seconds for me to recognize the simplicity and sweetness of the melody and captivating power of the repetitive lyric. It is uncommon to hear such truly melodic music. Add in the voice and the performance style and you are sure to be reminded of the late Harry Nilsson and the early Randy Newman. Fine music indeed.

Another Spin

This is one of the most moving collections of melodies and lyrics I've heard in a very long time. As wonderful as this songwriter's first album, All the Whispering", was, this one surpasses it on every song. The only problem is that we had to wait so long for him to bring his talents together again.
