The group is called RO:TORO, a blend of the Estonian words for reed and pipe. Just as the group mixes two bagpipes, saxophone and drums.
“We perform Estonian traditional bagpipe tunes and we have composed some pieces of our own inspired by them.”
Cätlin has studied bagpipe in University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy where, she got acquainted traditional techniques and repertoire of the bagpipe from the notations and previous recordings.
Sandra has been her pupil for eight years and it is fantastic musical understanding between them. When they play together it is like they are one musical person.
Marko Mägi, jazz-saxophone player is bringing modern thinking improvisation to this group.
Silver Sepp has developed his own drumset constructed from bowls and basins, that adds interesting sounds to ancient bagpipe tunes.
“Even the way they performed it had a rock 'n roll flavor. Jaago and Silamaa stood shoulder-to-shoulder at the front of the stage, their movements almost synchronized. Each held the bag under her left arm, and their pipes pointed straight out toward the crowd.” Gregory Warner, BBC

great bagpipe CD
author: Dave Jacoby
i have a collection of bagpipes, including one that was made by the great Andrus Taul, as well as a good-sized library of bagpipe literature and recordings. i was always frustarted at the inherent lack of good quality Torupill recordings, and i am pleased to say that RO:TORO came through with a wonderful collection of old tunes and new compositions that thrill the ears with a new freshness providsed by their sax player and percussionist. they have provided a vital link to the past and a glimpse of this fascinating instrument. THIS IS A MUST HAVE IF YOU LIKE BALTIC/SCANDINAVIAN MUSIC! thanks, RO:TORO, for making my collection that much richer.

Sweet Tones from a Land Up-North!
author: Edward Burke
Tradtional and original, jazz-and-new age-inspired music from Estonia led by the traditional, Estonian bagpipe, which would appear to have a similar sound to the Scottish smallpipes, not surprisingly, then, this music very much appeals to me as someone with Irish and Scottish heritage; come to think of it, this world/jazz/fusion music would appeal to people from many different backrounds: the songs have an upbeat, universal quality to them.
Saxophones and homemade, experimental percussion accompany the pipes superbly. I highly reccomend this music for all those looking for something a little different.
Tracks of note include "Oh,Oh,Oh, Kui Hea", "Kalamees", "Paras Reha", "Pulmamarss", "Torupillilugu", and "Nail Kummi", showing you just how musical your bicycle can be...just think about that next time you're out for a ride. Speaking of which, this might be good music to ride to on your headphones.
