notes
Pagans get no respect. At Christmas it's impossible to avoid the glut of holiday-flavored music, but when it comes to Halloween, all you have to offer your guests is the "Monster Mash" and the collected works of The Misfits.
Here at Rancho Culero, we declare this dearth of Halloween rock to be an outright tragedy - after all, what holiday lends itself to blood, guts, and rock n' roll better than Halloween? And what city kicks more ass on Halloween than New F**king York?
Hanging out at El Rancho one night, sipping on Tequizas, producers Peter McGouran and Jeffrey D. hit upon a novel idea; take the best bands from Brooklyn, toss them in the studio with a Halloween-themed assignment, and run before the place explodes. That's just what we did, and the result is the monstrously delicious compilation of spooky tracks known as Rotten to the Core.
Track Listing:
1) Halloween is Stupid - Rev. Vince Anderson feat. the JJ Paradise Players Club: Local favorite Rev. Vince Anderson goes metal with the JJ Paradise Players Club. Part history lesson and all rock, it sure beats going to church.
2) The Meat Eaters - Vic Thrill: Circus Clone Records founder and future rock legend Vic Thrill warns about the evil lurking in the pumpkin patch. Linus, be warned.
3) Sex Your Corpse Up - The Psychos!: Murder-punk pioneers The Psychos! just want to get freaky with their girlfriend's corpse one last time; is that so wrong?
4) Baron Saturday - GOD-the Band: Consummate iconoclasts and sticker-placement experts, GOD-the Band delivers a menacing remake of the Pretty Things' Halloween hit that should have been. The accents are fake but the evil is real.
5) A+ In Evil - Mz. PakMan: The ladies in Mz. PakMan have been rocking the NYC area for several years now with their unique brand of punky, trashy, raunchy, hilarious rock. Here they celebrate the formerly unsung glories of being a demon seed.
6) Scary Old World - Jeffrey D.: Pop aficionado, infectious hook-writer, and co-producer of this here compilation, Jeffrey D. sings about all things Halloween while not singing about Halloween at all. It is a scary old world, indeed.
7) Zombie Girls - The Ukes of Hazzard: Underground comedy scene phenomenon The Ukes of Hazzard are prepared to eat your brains. Are you ready to be scared... sexy?
8) Ship of the Dead - The Scurvy Pirates: Unfrozen and looking for booty, Dr. Demento faves The Scurvy Pirates have landed in New York to warn of the ship with no masts. Listen up, land lubbers.
9) Cutting Up Teen Sluts - Purple Organ: The howling lunatic in the six-breasted gorilla suit and the purple jockey underwear delivers a bizarrely infectious masterpiece on the dangers of having sex onscreen when there's almost certainly a homicidal maniac somewhere in the area. To quote the man himself: "Cutting up teen sluts is what America loves!"
10) Luther the Geek - Bigbooté: One of the most exciting live acts in New York City, Bigbooté contributes a foot-stomping horror song about a horror movie. Sure to increase rentals of Luther the Geek tenfold.
11) Big Lug - Boys' Star Library: Bumblebear Records' fabulous Boys' Star Library have met the devil, and they've learned that he's really just looking for some love. And M&Ms.
12)Song for Marianne Faithful - The Havana 13: Ms. Faithfull would be honored and David Lynch would be inspired by this broodingly sinister offering from the well-dressed men in the Havana 13.

Interesting mix of Brooklyn's indie bands
author: CompnRotten to the Core is a collection of music from some notable Brooklyn bands. i think everyone will find one or two songs enjoyable, its a real mix of styles. i bought it for the scurvy pirates. but i enjoyed some of the other tracks like 'cutting up teen sluts','halloween is stupid' and 'a+ in evil'. any cd that introduces me to new artists is always good and at 10 bux you cant go wrong.
A must have soon to be party favorite!
author: freakyd nycAt first wind, I was afraid that this would be just another compilation CD of starving bands trying to get noticed. Then I actually listened to the CD and the only thing I was afraid of was the songs themselves. This is a great Halloween compilation, filled with some of the spookiest and funniest tracks and sure to be a party hit. Personal favorite tracks include 'Cutting Up Teen Sluts' and 'The Meat Eaters,' but all the tracks fare at least a 7 out of 10.
