Album Notes

This is Charbel Rouhana's latest release (2006). The title of this CD reflects in itself the intricate times the artist is living in one of the most sensitive areas of the world: The Middle East. "Dangerous..." is how Charbel depicts the precarious political, economical, societal, musical and interpersonal spheres. He expresses those volatile states in 10 songs sometimes with humor sometimes with a melancholic approach but always with verve. He sings about travel and the difficulties in obtaining a Visa, about the country where the living is still easy, about the love of a woman, about coffee, about change and about the multifaceted society of Lebanon. This is Charbel Rouhana's first all songs album.

Charbel Rouhana was drawn to the oud because it reflected the oriental ambience of his beloved homeland. The oud {a short-necked, half pear-shaped, plucked, instrument} is a direct ancestor of the European lute and the most popular string instrument in Middle Eastern music. Born in Amchit, Lebanon in 1965, Charbel earned a Diploma in oud performance and a MA in musicology. Author of eight books describing a next style, technique and method of playing the oud, and a teacher at USEK {The Holy-Spirit University} and at Lebanon's National Conservatory of Music.
Winner of the Murex d'Or for the year 2000 / Musician of the Year. Winner of the First Prize at the 1990 Hirayama, Japan competition for the composition "Hymn of Peace".
Charbel composed music for the choreographer Abdul Halim Caracalla's shows: "2000 and 2 Nights" [2002], "Bi Laylat Qamar" [1999], "Andalusia, the Lost Glory" [1997], and "Elissa, Queen of Carthage" [1995]. Performed in "Jadal", an oud duet composed by Marcel Khalife [1995].
Composed the overture of "Fares Bani Marwan" TV series [2004], the original music of the film "Sayedat Al-Kasr", a Misr Interational Films / Youssef Chahine & Co. production [2004], and of the film "Living Martyr", a Signature production [2000].

We love this CD. Each one of the family, including my 7, 5 and 18 months old, has a Favorite track. And the more you play it, the more you appreciate it. It brings back memories, makes you cry, laugh and hope. Thanks Charbel for this wonderful work.

outstanding CD in all measures
Having proved himself as one of the best current oud players and innovators in his previous instrumental albums: (Salamat, Mada,Mazaj Alani, the Art of Middle Eastern Oud and Sourat Trait-d'union) Charbel Rouhana presents here yet another of his artisitc talents of song writing: 10 tracks of outstanding music over lyrics varying from topics on current lebanese social issues, to globalization to women to pure Love..
Rouhana performs some of the songs himself but uses also other Lebanese vocalists. Abeer Nehme in track 4 is stunning.

blends political awareness, traditional Arabic music and compositional experimen
from a review by Stefan Christoff:

Over the past nine years, Charbel Rouhana has become a fixture on the local music scene. A rising star and longtime “special guest” at the Blue Note Cafe in Hamra, Rouhana uses song to present an inspiring voice for social change.
The celebrated oud player and contemporary composer has successfully harnessed folkloric Lebanese traditions and combined them with present-day musical innovation and insightful social commentary.

Out of this world
it's a must get album, I never thought of buying it as a mp3, but I needed so badly and so I bought it this way. Excellent album, superb musician

Lebanese music at its finest
I love this CD, I can't stop playing it. I love the humor and the social criticism in tracks 1,3,7 and 10, Rosana a traditional song is in this CD (track 2) like never heard before, WOW! dangerous woman in track 5 is along Rouhana's trademark innovative music that started with Salamat.the love songs performed by Nader khoury and Abeer Nehme in 4,6,8 set a reform tone on how current arabic love songs should be.I highly recommend this CD.
