Francois Elie Roulin is the only composer in France to have been produced by Brian ENO on his OPAL label which enable him to say "... Francois Elie Roulin is one of the pioneering new sound-painters. His work is surprising and innovative and points towards new musical territories...".
In 1990, his innovative "Disque Rouge" which was well received by both critics and public, in 1993, Initial Numbers go forward in the trip and realise the wedding between electronic, acoustic instruments and soprano voices, in 1998, Spinning Skies, his third album sounded like a symphony troubled with rhythms and weird harmonies. like an audio version of a Philip K Dick book.
Today, arrives PARADE, a sparkling showroom of his eclectic talent. We are now in the heart of a virtual soundtrack, travelling into his multi-sided brain.
Each track is a surprise, a world, a delight. Like Forrest Gump picking up candies in his chocolate box, we don't know what to expect, but we know that it will be delicious.
Francois Elie Roulin is actually, the secret composer behind a huge significant part of the french audiovisual landscape.
Hundred soundtracks for adverts, some of them awarded at Cannes' "festival de la Pub" by Gold Lions.
His strengths as a composer has enabled him to produce for the image industry: Music for films, channel idents, program credits, documentaries, commercials ,...
Not to mention Dance, Theatre and cinema.(2 movies in 2005).
Even the original music, used by the French Gymnastic team at Olympic Games didn't escape to his talent !
He combines this richness and simplicity when writing music for children: Dozens of talking books for Disney, a collection for Ades with Danielle Fournier and cartoons with "Little King Macius".

Years ago I was on a CD fair and there I bought a CD from a till then for me unknown French artist. The title of the CD was: “Disque Rouge” and the name of the artist: Francois Elie Roulin. Everything on this CD was beautiful: The artwork for the sleeve, the artwork for the CD and also the music was (is) very beautiful. Strong original compositions with a typical French taste and a unique sound. So I made a review for the Dutch Electronic Music fanzine KLEM and I started to search for other music from this artist. Till now without success. For a few weeks ago I hat some correspondence with a friend about older work from France and I told him the name of Francois Elie Roulin. After then I started again my search on the Internet and there it was…..
A beautiful site from the artist himself. On this site I read that after Disque Rouge there where two more CD’s (pity out of print) and in January 2005 there will be his fourth CD. I contacted Francois Elie Roulin for my job as director/reviewer of the Dutch Electronic Music fanzin “Alfa Centauri” and within a week I received the CD “Parade”.
The artwork for this CD and the package was also beautiful.
Everyone who follows the French Electronic music (not Jarre) will recognize the typical style of this music. 14 Numbers with a typical frivol south European taste will keep your attention for almost 3 quarters of an hour. Some with sang and the others instrumentals. The music moves between electropop till soundtracks without disturbing each other. Very good how Roulin has dealt with this. Eye-catching tracks are: the openings number “Parade“, this number can be used as openings number for the Dutch travelling summer theatre festival “The Parade”, track 5 “Sur la Route” looked walked away from a Louis de Funes Gendarme film from the 50’s. A simple composition but from such a beauty that I can’t get enough from this track. Also track 6 “Dead cat blues” is a perfect combination of synths, drum and background voices. Track 11 is a film look alike soundtrack whereby Strings on a beautiful way combines tense and sadness. Track 12 “Evil Aliens Play Banjo” can be in first used for a spaghetti western from the 70’s but on the end you will recall this opinion. The guitar sound and the heavy woman voice place this track in the heavy progressive music. Track 14 is a bombastic composition like the bombastic theme from Star Wars and with that a perfect ending of this CD.
