Alto sax legend Phil Woods has teamed with guitarist Royce Campbell and his trio of Bob Bowen on bass & Ron Free on drums for swing jazz versions of many of the greatest songs from the movies, including The Shadow of Your Smile, Laura, Smile, Secret Love, You Must Believe In Spring, Manha De Carnival along with a couple lesser known songs such as the theme from the Fellini movie Amarcord by Nino Rota and Soldier In The Rain by Henry Mancini.
Royce Campbell was the long time guitarist for Henry Mancini. Drummer Ron Free was a fixture in the New York jazz scene in the 50's.This was the first time Phil Woods and Ron Free had played together in 50 years! Phil woods is suffering from emphysema,so he needed to sit out on a couple tracks but the ones he plays on have tremendous energy for someone suffering from a breathing disease. In addition to his vast discography of his own recordings Phil Woods is also known for playing the sax solo on Billy Joel's hit song, "Just The Way You Are. "
The melodic maturity that the musicians display on the recording makes it one of the all time classic recordings of this style of jazz.
