Music that makes you want to hear more
author: John Book, Music For America
Roykeys (that's one word) plays bass, keyboards, and guitar, and his Cool Fusion (self-released) is the kind of soulful jazz that would have been in every record collection 20 to 25 years ago. The album has all of the elements that makes this style of music great, from stylized flute solos, a Hammond B-3 serving as a hidden cannon, and horns that sound so good it surprised me that they were from keyboards (or at least no horn section was credited). It's the kind of jazz that will make you dance, funk, sing, and groove at the same time, with Roykeys' bass work making the late night creep all that more tantalizing in such songs as "Summer Chill", "Flow", and "Mood Swing". It definitely swings when it needs to, and my only complaint is that some of these songs fade prematurely, where it would have been more effective if they were able to go towards a proper cold ending. It does make the listener want to hear more, which is good.
Cool Fusion is more "cool" than "fusion" proper, but perhaps the fusion involved is started by the listener. Listen on.
