When Jerry Kalaf released his third CD, "Just Like Old Times" to critical acclaim, one of the not so acclaimed responses came from a Japanese distributor of Mainstream Jazz. He suggested that we record the trio playing jazz standards without an orchestral back drop.
Here it is! This Side Up is our recording of five jazz standards and one original composition featuring pianist Rich Ruttenberg, bassist Joel Hamilton along with drummer Jerry Kalaf.
Our goal was to honor the piano trio tradition while exploring as always, our approach to the spontaneous development of the material.

Swinging sensitivity

I was lucky enough to hear a few early mixes of this project. It is so wonderful to hear it completed. I love the intimacy and communication between the musicians. And the arrangements of these familiar tunes are very refreshing and unexpected. The playing is first rate and you can tell these are musicians with great ears and a deep love of the art form.
