The Point Of Stars

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Point of Stars: Richard takes
melodic , harmonic and form excursions, coupled with
his usual adventurous approach to lyrics and subject
matter in this one. Providing encouragement is
Kneebody, the most creative new experimental band
playing today. They include Ben Wendl, Adam Benjamin,
Shane Endsley, Kaveh Rastegar and Nate Wood. Greg
Leisz also played on two of the tracks. The result is,
as Rodney Dangerfield said in caddyshack, "the rest of
you guys, take some lessons."

Quiet Brilliance
The songs here create a marvelous and glistening folk pop experience I think. There's wonderful imagery (esp. on the mind-bogglingly great 'Hollyhocks of Mission San Yguerra'). If there's a lot of sadness and self-examination, it's complemented/offset by fluid and lovely arranging.
Certainly comparisons come up like Joni Mitchell,
Dylan's wistful side, many aspects of SoCal sound
from the Beach Boys to Michael McDonald to his
own group Honk-- and not a little jazz and blues
and others. But he still carves out his own
place really well. Heartbreaking at times, & I admit it took me awhile to fully appreciate all the subtleties of the album. But well worth the journey: & new things to appreciate with each listen which is unusual for most pop music. All his other albums (including ones with Honk) are great too!
