Album Notes

"Brown's songs have been described as catchy alt-pop, but they're darker and subtler than that. Many of them have a twist that catches you by surprise... dawning awareness that things aren't what they seem."
The Oregonian

"...an impressive range of styles... What ties them together is her equally impressive vocal range. With just a guitar, she's capable of hard-driving rock and tender ballads."
Borders Books and Music News

"Rachel Taylor Brown's music defies easy summation. While most of her songs emanate from a folk idiom, there are enough directions to keep any listener on his musical toes... Her singing voice is instantly familiar while remaining uniquely her own...her consistently skewed lyrical perspective always keeps things interesting. This is thoughtful music for the thinking person."
Two Louies Magazine

"Brown first demonstrated this amazing scope on her first CD, "Do Not Stare," and she continues to amaze on her new CD "Jonah Days." Over the course of 12 tracks, Brown spins out strange, unsettling stories about fate, bad timing, grand disappointments, cosmic punishments and the blurred line between dream and waking. Brown doesn't make it easy, but she makes it well worthwhile. A few times through Jonah Days and you'll agree."
The Portland Alliance

"Candid and diverse."

Displays a wide range of vocal and songwriting talent

Do Not Stare bounces from the playful to the pensive without missing a step. It's got folk ballads, it's got funk, and it's got something close to a sea chanty. Rachel's songwriting is funny and thoughtful, and her voice is sweet...but tough when it needs to be. As a former San Franciscan, my favorite number is Sutro Baths, though Lonnie sticks in my head...and Uncle Bob is very moving. Overall, a fine and diversely eclectic effort.

Bought this CD at a live show. I've listened to it 6 times and it keeps surprising me. Great on a first listen, but it gets even better the more you hear it. I like Elliott Smith, Cake, etc. If you like quirky/weird music with strong melody, this is it. The lyrics are fantastic. She's great live too.

Funny, touching, funky, off beat, witty, poignant, mysterious. I laughed, I cried, it became a part of me. Rachel's beautiful voice and wonderful songwriting make her debut CD a delight to listen to. The band sounds great, including some funky B3 playing. These guys have got to be the cat's pyjamas live. My favorite song is Uncle Bob. This disc plays in my car constantly! I can't wait to hear her next disc. Buy it, buy it, buy it, buy it.......
