About "real:"
Our debut EP is hand-made music in folk and electro-style: we wrote and recorded it in basements and attics, performed it with curious hearts, and filled it with magically realistic songs about lust, secrets and broken elevators.
About rubyrough:
Stephanie is a singer-songwriter from Boston who found her first song hidden in an acoustic guitar on her back porch. Horst is a sound designer from Germany who tickled his first tunes out of a Commodore 64 computer. Together we are rubyrough. We're a do-it-ourself band: everything you see or hear from us is made with lots of love, time and elbow-grease. We have a lot of fun doing it and are so glad you stopped by to take a listen!
How we got started:
Stephanie found Horst through the Internet. It began when he remixed her folk-style songs, but soon a flood of e-mails, uploads and downloads led to a more intense collaboration. It wasn't long before we began composing together and rubyrough was born.
Sometimes it's tough to coordinate ourselves -- Stephanie is on the road a lot for her job as a singer and Horst is crazy busy with his design company. But thanks to computers, we can keep on working through the same medium that brought us together in the first place: the internet. Because the moments that we can share space and time are so seldom it became a theme for our music and the concept for our debut album: "realtime."
We wrote and recorded our freshman EP, "real," in Stephanie's basement and Horst's attic. Once the music was finished we took some crazy pictures, Horst made a cover, and with the help of CDBaby we can even sell it to nice people.
Our sophomore ep, "time" (release: Jan 3, 2011) will be all about life's significant instants: when we meet and fall in love, when we lose ourselves and when we find ourselves again, living in the moment, and the when we need to pay the rent (that ever-present date that pumps fear into the hearts of musicians everywhere).
We've had a lot of luck so far and our songs are featured in:
- the American TV series "Lie to Me" (FOX Network)
- the Canadian film "Seven Deadly Sins"
- the German festival film "EQ"
- the British film "21 Days Later - Mentawais"
- commercial for Nam Yang Dairy "French Cafe" (asia)
- samplers with Duffy and Amy Winehouse (EU and Asia)
Here's what people say about us:
"I can dream to this music." - Sara L. from Augusta
"'real' from rubyrough is a must-hear. Singer-songwriter Stephanie Forryan's alluring vocals, thoughtful lyrics and poignant melodies are the perfect guide in sound designer Horst Niewierra's wild and enchanted electronic world."
-Paul M. from Newport
"Hypnotic, sensual and spellbinding… the indie scene's newest best-kept secret." - Da Zine
"Folk bewitches Electro: tantalizing female vocals open the door into an unexpectedly charming world of electronic sounds and beats." - MukMag
