Album Notes

UK folksinger Rupert Wates makes his American debut with Coast To Coast: Postcards From America, set for release in February 2008. After several albums as artist and/or songwriter in Britain, Wates brings his melodic folk to the States with a group of new songs, written during his travels across North America, from NYC to Santa Fe to California. Recorded in London, Paris, and Seattle, Coast To Coast is a musical road trip. It displays Wates’ gift for melody, as well as his wit and sincerity, focusing his novelist’s eye on American geography and politics, capturing moments and movements. Potent melodies and strong hooks are delivered by a seasoned hand, letting the songs speak for themselves.

'A great, distinctive voice'
author: Marty Bormolini
"Rupert Wates has a great, distinctive voice and shows great control in his ability to project the feeling of travelling across America. If you need something to listen to on a road trip, you might want to consider Rupert Wates" (Marty Bormolini, 'The Pacifican')

"Long may he run"
author: Tom Semioli
"Remember when Joni, Jackson, James and Neil lived in the canyon? That's exactly what you get with Rupert Wates. Unforgettable melodies are in no short supply throughout Wates' audio travelogue. But it's the little elements that make 'Coast' special: the funky Fender Rhodes and Beach Boys inspired harmonies beneath 'And The Wave Will Sing', the warm slide licks on 'Goodbye To The Old School'...Long may he run" (T Semioli, Minor 7th Online)

A Delight To Listen To
author: Britsound Radio
“...Nothing less than a delight to listen to. At times seeming like a mixture of Nick Drake and Richard Thompson, Wates’ songs are acoustic observations and stories of America from the perspective of a cultural outsider. These are songs crafted with care and imbued with sincerity and conviction. ‘And The Wave Will Sing’ is an obvious highlight, with its driving, looping bass leading to its anthemic calypso chorus with vigorous acoustic guitars strumming away in accompaniment...This is an album to be savored, not rushed. Let the magic gently seep in” (Rob Quicke, Britsound Radio).
