5 Stars for Content; 3 Stars for Sound Quality

Yes, the material is fantastic, as the other reviewers have mentioned. In fact, I'd rank at least 50 percent of the tracks on this disc with the best of Bill Monroe, the Stanleys, Flatt & Scruggs, and Reno & Smiley in their prime. Rusty York was one of the premier bluegrass banjoists of the 1950s -- and that's putting him up there with Earl, Don, Ralph, and J.D.. If you doubt it, just listen to York's blistering "Dixie Strut" --- it'll blast you right over the Appalachians! Where the disc falters is in the sonics. There's very noticeable surface noise and background "shushing" of some sort which mystifies me, considering these recordings were made in the late Fifties in Cincinatti. Hard to believe that in this great city there wasn't a studio that couldn't have put out a pristine-sounding product; nor is it plausible that the original masters -- if they still exist -- should have deteriorated to this level. My hypothesis is that the record label ("Jewel") got hold of some bootleg versions (or second-generation tapes?) and made their conversions accordingly. Either that, or York & the Boys were stuck with a lousy recording studio in the first place. In any event, given the terrific quality of the material, my hope is that a first-rate label like Bear Family ultimately gets a license to release these tracks with better sonics. All bluegrass fans deserve it.
