Album Notes

RUTH WALLIS was born in Brooklyn, New York. She studied dancing, voice and piano, so it was only natural that she would pursue a career in show business. After high school, the teenager sang in both the Isham Jones and Benny Goodman (briefly) orchestras. Starting in 1948, she recorded risque songs for Deluxe Records. She went on to form the Wallis Original Record Corp., her own company based in Linden, New Jersey. Unlike many other party records, which could barely afford more than a singer and a piano, Ruth Wallis' songs had full orchestras, usually under the direction of Mac Ceppos or Jimmy Carroll.

Ruth Wallis composed the music and lyrics for all of her songs. Although her music ran the gamut from jazz to ballads and calypsos, she became known for her 'saucy' double entendres, understanding that suggestiveness is sexier than blatancy. Typecast as a risque singer, radio stations eschewed her. Her songs were banned in Boston during the Eisenhower era, and Australian customs confiscated her records. This only added to her aura. She traveled extensively as an international star doing her own songs and appeared in top supper clubs in Las Vegas and Miami, and was a sensation and sell out on her tours of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and London. Ruth retired from the stage in 1970, a veteran of eleven albums which sold worldwide for over two decades.

'BOOBS ! THE MUSICAL' (subtitled: 'The World According to Ruth Wallis') opened at the Triad theatre in New York City on May 19, 2003.'BOOBS' is a musical review based on the catalogue of songs written and performed by Ruth Wallis from the 50's through the early 70's.

It garnered rave reviews from the New York Times, The Daily News, New York Magazine, New York Post and Newsday. By closing date, Sunday, February 8, 2004, 'BOOBS' had played 13 previews and 272 performances. It has had subsequent runs in New Orleans and Wichita. 'BOOBS' is a testament to the talent of Ms. Wallis. Not bad for the 'Saucy Redhead' whose records were banned in Boston!

I recieved the CD, thanks. In the early 50's my husband was told not to listen to this record, he often wonder, why? After 58 years it still stuck in his mind. On January 21st 2008 in the issue of Time Magazine it mentioned Ruth Wallis passing and the recording of Davy's Dinghy, it sparked a rememberable moment when he was a very young. He could not resist listening to the sound track and purchasing the CD. OH! how times have changed. We are both in our ate 60's Thanks again for wanting our feed back. Joanne House

Ruth Wallis is one of most underated singer / song writers, born several decades too early to be truley appreciated. This CD of her 'Best Bits' will appeal to everyone, finally socuety has learned to laugh at it's self and the songs of Ruth Wallis do exactly this, poke fun at the things that people find funny but are scared to laugh at. If you buy a friend a present this year, get them this CD, they will love it! Great for Dinner Parties or ... if your a Drag Act buy this CD, the audience will love it and you!

This CD was awesome. The songbook of Ruth Wallis has been made into an off-Broadway play, and after hearing this CD I MUST see the show. If you buy this CD, you WILL be happy.
