Rhett y Los Borrachos Empeñados is a group of young, affable, like-minded Cuban-American rock musicians from Miami. The band, which has been writing, recording and performing collectively for about 6 years, is also known as Rhett and the Pawn Shop Drunks.
Building on the momentum achieved with countless local live shows, including their monthly American Spic Fest @ Tobacco Road, an extended residency @ Hoy Como Ayer (Little Havana) and several out of town showcases (New York's, Acme Underground and Arlene's Grocery and Boston's Harper's Ferry), the band has now come into its own - in two languages.
With a growing catalog of songs from their previous releases (2001's "All the Things We Couldn't Say" and 2003's "God Lost Faith" and their third installment, "American Spic Sessions, Vol. 1" 2004), Rhett y L.B.E. are quickly making a name for themselves, breaking through the mold of what Miami rock bands are typically perceived to be.
Afforded the chance to appear on 98.3 FM's “Fuego Rock” radio program and showcase before a packed house of music industry insiders @ Hoy Como Ayer in late summer 2004, the band decided to pen some tunes in the language native to their parents: Spanish.
Recorded, mixed and mastered between October of 2004 and March 2005, the band's debut bowed on June 28th, 2005. "Entre Dios y el Diablo" features the first single and video "El Negro y las Balsa (si nos coje Fidel)". This lively and unconventional tune playfully entones the struggles of yesterday and today's Cuban national.
Under the direction of Franco Parente and John Doe Entertainment, the band filmed a promo clip for the song @ various Miami locations in March of 2005. Visually, it is a visitation to a late 1950's street party where the band is playing to an audience of dancers. The boys are also shown fleeing Cuba via inner tube and guest-stars Cuban comedian and television personality Orlando Casin training for a similar water-borne escape.
Each copy of "Entre Dios y El Diablo" comes with a copy of the clip embedded as a .mov file.
Standouts on the disc include the lovely ballad (and second single) "Quizas", the Latin funk of "Ay, No Me Digas", the rollicking "Hasta Ese Entonce", the tender "Angeles Perdidos" and a moody, passionate reinterpretation of the Roberto Carlos classic "Amigo". The album also includes a DJ Le Spam remix of "El Negro y La Balsa".
