“The Spirit of Ontario” is a Rochester, NY, based band that is built around the acoustic, singer-songwriter style and honest vocal delivery of John Sacheli.
Their debut album, "Simple Things," is a lyrically loaded collection of acoustic songs that documents the beginnings of the band and life in the middle class.
While keeping their acoustic roots in the forefront, the three musicians have also started to play out as a "Power Trio." The use of electric guitar, and the three-piece format brings a rawness, and “real” quality to their shows.
On stage, the band connects on a level that likens them to Crazy Horse and Cream, but with a heavy emphasis on lyrical and social content that stems from their love of folk music.
Their music can be categorized as “alt-country,” but this band wasn’t meant to be labeled. They have very little in common with the modern sounds coming out of Nashville, or L.A., and, if anything, would rather be compared to the gritty realism of Country and Rock music’s pioneers.
Their sound is every bit as important as their message, and this band sure has something to say.

Genuine and soulful folk rock

Right from the start, the Simple Things album is inviting. It has a heavy-laminate paper cover with full-width images on each panel, every picture an expression of those “simple things” the album talks about. Jars and swing sets, tables and half-parched autumn grass. The photos have the affect of drawing you into a very organic frame of mind; instead of compelling you to think deeply about the subject of the photo, they’re the kinds of images you might see in those quiet moments when you stare off into space and think about whatever is on your mind.
And it’s in this frame of mind that I listened to the first song, Simple Things. The production of the album really jumps out at you early; it sounds like John’s playing guitar right next to you. The credit for this intimate and lush production goes to the bass player for the band, Matt Klock. Actually, this is one of my favourite tunes that I’ve heard so far, anyway, so it’s just nice to hear it in such a good-quality recording. After the first verse, the bass and drums kick in for the second, introducing the rest of the band, The Spirit of Ontario. Despite their obvious youth, the whole band has a very seasoned and soulful sound.
