Album Notes

From the Americana opening track of 68 Skylark (featuring his full band) to sparse acoustic tunes like Stolen Bicycles, The Refuge showcases all of his Folk, Acoustic and Americana influences.

Paul Sachs' new CD was recorded in different studios over a span of three years, it was produced by him and New York City engineer Al Houghton. It features several guest musicians, including singer/songwriter Amy Allison and Cellist, Abby Newton.

The Refuge is about how the past effects our decisions and relationships in life as love and loss permeate all the songs.

Paul Sachs writes urban acoustic/folk songs in the tradition of Springsteen and Harry Chapin. He was born and raised in New York City and that's where he draws most of his material. Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and Springsteen are the songwriters that influenced him, and pushed him into the folk music circles of the city. He was featured in Fast Folk Musical Magazine. One of his songs was eventually selected for inclusion in the Smithsonian Fast Folk collection. Sachs still lives in NYC, performing in various venues around the city. He has recorded two independent albums, both featuring often raw and seeringly personal songs of life and love on the mean streets. His fingerstyle guitar work and powerful voice combine to create mesmerizing vignettes of the city that has been the backdrop of his life.

“When it comes to voices, they don't come much more powerful than our old friend, Paul Sachs. He'd blow people away on a regular basis down at the Fast Folk Cafe and he's still doing it.” Acoustic Live Magazine

I've seen Paul play a number of times in NYC and this CD is by far his best and most diverse. A powerful songwriter who songs go straight for the jugular. Whether it's just him and his guitar on songs like, "Bridges Burning" or the full band throttle of "'68 Skylark" The Refuge is a great CD. An emotional ride by one of New York's best songwriters. Buy it, you won't be disappointed!
