Album Notes

Paul Safar and his consortium of talented musicians bring variety, energy and skill to their craft.

Embracing the pop, folk, rock and jazz traditions, Paul's group presents original songs with strong vocals and improvisatory instrumentals.

Paul switches between piano and acoustic guitar to accompany his voice.

As a full band, he is joined by Sean Brennan who provides innovative percussion work and Mike Hatgis who lends his melodic approach to bass guitar.

Lori Deskin's pure vocal harmonies and Jon Neher's sax work round out the group.

Paul sings of human relationships and humans' relationship to the natural world.

Classically trained, his music is "a little bit folky with a dramatic flair".

Paul lives and gardens in Eugene,Oregon with his wife and two young children.

REVIEWS

This is an eclectic, diverse cd that works.

This record is big: 65 minutes of music spread over fifteen compositions covering an extremely wide stylistic range. Safar has synthesized his classical training with diverse pop and jazz influences from the Beatles and early Pink Floyd to Keith Jarrett and John Coltrane creating a sound all his own. There's a song with prepared piano a la John Cage("Hiking Song") and an almost symphonic piece in several movements("Garden Suite"). Not that EarthPlay is an album of chamber music- things kick off in a decidely groovy,fun-loving mood with "Artists in the Making". Indeed it's remarkable how Safar manages to move between these musical worlds in such a surprisingly cohesive and unpretentious way. EarthPlay's message of love for the natural world and human potential, tuneful songs and musical adventurousness will undoubtedly win more than a few fans and rightly so.
