notes

"Painting of a Painting" is the third release from New York City songwriter/ chanteuse Rachael Sage, and the follow-up to 1998's "Smashing The Serene", which garnered critical praise and charted in CMJ's Top 30 & AAA stations nationwide. A top seller on the internet, Rachael has created a big buzz online and consistently tours throughout the U.S. and Europe, hitting cities like Prague, Cologne and Berlin - in a quest to bring her music to wherever there is a passionate, listening audience.

Musicians Denny Fongheiser (Tracy Chapman), Jack Petruzelli (Joan Osborne), Stephanie Winters (Paula Cole) and Joe Bonadio (Duncan Sheik) are part of a stellar line-up contributing to Sage's lush, folk-pop sound. Longtime collaborators and NY-natives Rob Curto, Ben Butler, Carol Sharar, David Rosenberg and Conrad Korsch also appear on the album, which was produced by Rachael and Emmy Award-winning composer/engineer Andy Zulla.

MORE ABOUT RACHAEL...
Rachael Sage is a modern day renaissance woman. She's the creator of Feathor Boa Pop - the psychedelic musings of a young East Village woman who tours the U.S. and Europe playing some of the most interesting music in pop and rock today!

Combining timeless pop-craftsmanship with contemporary feminist sensibilities, her music has been described by THE VILLAGE VOICE as "earthiness, color and emotion...Sage has folk on the brain and piano keys for hands and is sure to put on a show sublime."

A John Lennon Songwriting Contest and USA Songwriting Competition winner, Rachael has toured with Ani DiFranco, played the Lilith Fair, appeared at Rockrgrl 2000, and won the ASCAP Pop Songwriting Contest twice. Sage runs her own nationally distributed label MPress Records in New York and designs instruments and clothing that have been featured in the New York Times. She has recently written her first book of poetry entitled "Karma's Trapeze", currently only available at her live shows.

Welcome to the keyboard and vocal adventurousness of Rachael Sage!

RECENT REVIEWS:

The Boston Globe - "She is a forthright, sassy, twentysomething New Yorker, with an independent drive...a strong voice that rings with despair, passion, anger, hope, and glory. Watch out for Rachael Sage."

Cecil Doyle, KRVS (Lafayette, LA) - "It's absolutely beautiful and well worth the wait...Only first got a listen to it last night but already have tunes like "Better From Mars","Cyanide and Cinnamon" and "Pictures They Took" permanantly etched in the brain. A marvelously beautiful piece of work!"

Music Dish - "New York's precise and powerful Rachael Sage provokes a lot of comparisons: to Kate Bush, to Tori Amos, to Alanis Morissette. They're all just, and they all miss the mark...Rachael's music shimmers in the heart and curls through the room like a spring breeze."

Album Network - "Her music is deeply personal and sometimes quirky, her adeptness at blending in various ethnic tonalities gives her a sound that is universal in appeal."

Ani DiFranco - "Go buy Rachael's album. She's not sitting at home whining because she wants to be a musician. she is a real musician touring because she wants to, without the help of the corporate umbrella."

  • Lyrics that touch you, music that moves you

Rachael Sage is nothing less than a genius in my mind. The more I listen to this CD the more I hear. Her piano playing is remarkable and the lyrics are truly amazing.

  • More gorgeousness than a gallery of paintings!
    author: Jenna

This even, effervescent album sparkles; it's creative, contagious, colorful, and complex enough to perfectly backdrop nearly every setting or situation. And right from the soaring, infectious, bittersweet opening single, the album is nuanced and balanced enough to suit moods ranging from sheer dejection to utter elation. Rachael's intricate, imaginative, energetic folky pop, enhanced by her own sprightly piano stylings, reflects a diversity of musical influences; it's catchy stuff with lyrical and melodic hooks and choruses that will stick with you, yet it never disintegrates into the vapid or overly repetitive. Similar to Ani DiFranco, Rachael's vocal capacities are incredibly broad-ranging and versatile. Both lyrically (she's a fabulous lyricist) and vocally as well as musically, she resembles the offspring of Ani and Tori Amos with a dash of Joni Michell; however, she's definitely "her own thing." A certain delicate subtlety prevents her songs from becoming overblown, and she roots her poetic and philosophical musings (about life and relationships) in concrete, earthly details. Above all, unlike many artists, Rachael can be tough, passionate, angry, and sorrowful, yet remains strong and hopeful throughout, never succumbing to cynicism, bitterness, or victimhood. In short, this is a totally uplifting, affirming, empowering, transcendent album that manages to be all about peace and love while remaining smart, grounded, and not sugarcoated. And it's not just intellectually and emotionally stimulating, it just plain sounds gorgeous! Overall, a truly original gem that makes other recordings seem flat. I highly recommend this to anyone, for yourself or as a gift.

  • BEST ALBUM I'VE HEARD THIS YEAR...
    author: Jenn (jginn@hotmail.com)

I bought your album without knowing anything about you, and it's the best album I've heard this year. You have a way with words, and it's always nice to hear someone who can rip on the piano! I'm about to buy your other two CDs from Cdbaby, and I've been telling all of my buddies to check you out...I'd love to see you perform live! I put Sistersong as the first song on a mix to my closest girl friends with the general theme of how girls kick ass! Just thought you should know that I think you kick ass! Thanks, Jenn
