"A strong debut effort consisting of 18 tracks on 2 CDs!"
-Throw It On The Roof Records, May 2003

"Sage's self-titled debut shines through admirably and is worth checking out... From rock & roll to salsa, Sage will get you up on your feet shaking to their infectious grooves."
-Glide Magazine, June 2003

"Good players, singers and writers, Sage will move your feet and your mind. The fact that the four members all write and sing makes for a surprisingly cohesive sound in spite of its improvisational nature. The results are much more rewarding than most other jam bands."
-Bob Makin, Courier News, December 2003

Sage is a 4-piece rock band from New Hope, PA. Two guitars, a bass, drums and three part vocal harmonies produce their powerful and fluid sound sometimes reminiscent of bands with many more members and several different instruments. Drawing on influences in rock, pop, funk, jazz, reggae, bluegrass, and even heavy metal, Sage captivates a crowd, whipping them into a frenzy of dance and excitement. The energy created by these four musicians has prompted the media to proclaim: "This band is not to be missed!"

In April 2003, Sage released their self-titled debut album, a double CD set with 18 original songs. Sage has performed all over the northeast entertaining diverse audiences with their contagious grooves and improvisations. The band's busy schedule and varied setlists has secured a large and dedicated fan base that travels. Sage has also organized and headlined its own outdoor festival, Jam at the Grove, luring waves of music fans to Bucks County, PA. With the help of its shows, the band's website www.sageband.com, and live concert and studio recordings, people young and old have embraced Sage's music. The band's philosophy is to remain faithful to the spirit of musical exploration while always providing a tangible base from which to experiment.

Good sounds...reminded me of the "dead"
I liked the sounds and the mix of music and styles.

Emerging from the cerebral town of New Hope, Pennsylvania comes a band as diverse as the many shops and galleries that line the Main Street of its hometown.
Sage's self-titled debut album (recorded in front of a live audience at Sweet Creek Studios, Ottsville, PA), offers two discs packed to the brim with upbeat grooves sure to make you move your body.

Highlights start with disc one's "Edna," whose quirky lyrics introduce the first of three or four highly climactic, extended improvisations. However, even the album's shorter songs swiftly produce intensity.

"Dagobah" is a short Santana-ish instrumental that intertwines the lead and rhythm guitars of Marc Gallo and Tim Nayfield to salsa perfection while complementing them with Dave "Tree" Ryden's steady bass line.

Disc two is even more prominent, exploding off to the races with another salsa-like instrumental, "El Viaje," into the reggae sampling of "Downtown." "Love Your Mother" is a well-written story ballad by drummer Gabe Rohmann with an excellent lead solo from Gallo sandwiched in between the tale.

"Rocking Chair" and "Flow" both unleash long, and very contrasting free improvisations. "Chair" escalates to a dramatic and electrifying conclusion, while "Flow" is a more plateau-like jam that hypnotically fuses all four instruments equally.

The end of the disc is difficult to distinguish without looking at the whole display, as it segues into "Texas River" via Nayfield's lyrics. This song later progresses to -and ends with- a rapid bluegrass signature.

Sage's self-titled debut shines through admirably and is worth checking out.
Based in New Hope, Pennsylvania, the four-piece rock band, Sage, has released their self-titled debut album in April 2003. The double CD set contains eighteen tracks recorded in front of a live audience at SweetCreek studios in Pennsylvania. A double-live disc is an ambitious undertaking for any band, at any stage of its career - let alone as their debut release. However, Sage's self-titled debut shines through admirably and is worth checking out.

Each disc is pack with a diverse arrangement of rock, funk, reggae and free-flowing grooves. The first disc opens with "Bud Jones", not the band's best song, but the following two tracks, "Edna" and "For Trip" quickly show the band's ability to mix it up. "Edna", an eleven-minute free-flowing jam is thick with funk-laddened grooves. "For Trip" is a great track with nice harmonies and rolling guitar rifts from Marc Gallo and Tim Nayfield. "Dragonfly" and "Find My Way" sure up the middle of disc 1 with a bit of pop showing up in "Dragonfly" and contagious lyrics and groove that keep you moving in "Find My Way" - one of the best songs on either disc.

Disc 2 is clearly the better disc of the two and more accurately showcases the band's diverse range of styles and influences. The disc opens up strong with a heavy dose of percussion and guitar solos on the Latin-fused instrumental "El Viaje". A staple in the band's live sets, "El Viaje" gets you moving with fast-paces, salsa style rhythms and jams. "Love Your Mother" and "Rocking Chair" are two long tracks with solid jams with funk and jazz influences.

While the band claims to be more of a rock band than a "jam band", a few tracks including "Edna", "Rocking Chair" and "Flow->", display the band's ability to experiment with free flowing jams that bring you to the edge but never quite drop you off the cliff. From rock & roll to salsa, Sage will get you up on your feet shaking to their infectious grooves. ----Brian Piccolo,
