Album Notes

Saint Bushmill's Choir first gathered in 1994 as a group of old friends from the Seattle punk underground who shared a secret love of Irish music and a passion for strong drink. Members of bands such as: The Gits, Subvert, Alcohol Funnycar,
Supersuckers, Toucans and Christdriver took part. Playing actual music on acoustic instruments was new to most of them. But somehow after months of Monday night sessions and gallons of whiskey, a unique sound emerged. Rough and raw and full of punk influence, there existed a passion and urgency in the songs and performance which became infectious. "The Choir" gained a large following of Irish music fans and punkers who felt they'd found a fresh voice.
More musical than punk rock and more rockin' than traditional Irish music, The Choir continues to perform to packed houses on the west coast. This self titled debut full-length CD is a great represention of the band's unique ability to transcend stereotypes and inspire listeners.

Though not actually from Ireland, Saint Bushmill's is still some of the best Celtic Punk on the market. Heavily influenced by the Pogues, Saint Bushmill's does several traditional songs in Pogues style, as well as integrating some original Pogues music into their traditional songs. A great listen, advised for any fan of Irish music.

If you like paddy punk...pick up the this CD and any others that the band puts out. Found the band thru the Shite N' Onions web site (thank you). Sam Hall is definitely a favorite---but whole CD really kicks.

Awful Good

I wanted to say that this was just awful! But it grows on you! I love traditional Irish music -- its 50% of the CDs that I buy. I grew up with R&R -- and I still buy a lot. This CD is neither, but at the same time it is both. Once I realized this is the sound moderately good R&R musicians would make playing Irish music, it suddenly became fun. The more I play it, the more I like it!

http://wwpv.smcvt.edu/ Kick-ass, hard-hitting Celtic punk rock in the style of Flogging Molly and the Dropkick Murphys with a bit of a polka, ska and bluegrass feel. Notable tracks include "The Secret Set", "Foggy Dew", Molly McGuire's" and "The Greenland Whale Fisheries", that's if you don't get a seizure from the fiesty, machine-gun pluckings of banjo player Dan Baugher, who adds fairly awesome banjo work to a great majority of the album. Bassist Pete Remine makes up one part of a super-tight, rock-ready rhythm section. Listen also for Rob Whitmer's beer-soaked, Oktoberfest-style accordion on "Black and Tans".
