Bio
George Sakellariou began playing guitar at an early age in Athens, Greece. His first teacher was his brother, a talented composer of popular music, and his formal musical training was at the conservatory of Music in Athens. After graduating with highest honors, he was invited to further his studies with the renowned guitarist Andres Segovia after the great master heard him play.
Upon completion of his studies at the age of 20, Mr. Sakellariou joined the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatoryof Music, where he became chairman of the Guitar Department. There he taught his style of playing, with emphasis on clear tone and smooth lyrical lines, combined with a precise, strong sense of rhythm.
Mr. Sakellariou has performed throughout the world in such concert halls as the Kennedy Center, San Francisco's Herbst Theatre, Dallas' Majestic Theatre, Singapore's State Theatre, the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, the International Music Festival in Turkey, and many colleges and universities in such cities as Heidelberg, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Montevideo, Toronto, Calgary, Taipei and Osaka. He has made many radio and television appearances, including a recital for the BBC, two half-hour recitals for PBS Television and a program for Radio France.
