Rootsy country folk with beautiful echoes of Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris

notes

In August of 2006, Georgia born and raised singer/songwriter Sally Jaye stepped into Elliott Smith's former studio to commence recording on her new record. The room previously housed the final sessions of Smith (where he had hand-picked all of the gear), along with past productions of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The Elected, Jonathan Rice and had recently welcomed members of Maroon 5 and Rilo Kiley. Sally Jaye recruited her producer friend Will Golden (Ian Ball {Gomez}, Michelle Branch, Joe Purdy, Meiko) to helm the sessions, along with Grammy nominated engineer/mixer Mike Terry (The Eagles, Foo Fighters) to round out the crew. After 10 days of solid recording the foundation for the newly dubbed Amarillo sessions was set.

Raised on the music and songwriting of Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, Loretta Lynn, and Willie Nelson, and inspired by Bruce Springsteen and Ryan Adams, the songs on Amarillo tell stories of Sally Jaye's life growing up in Lawrenceville, Georgia, the movement towards Los Angeles, and the spaces inbetween. Characters such as carnies and cotton ginners appear in her songs; the local junkyard and summer evenings on the porch; and late night drives alone across Texas are peppered throughout.

After a prodding from Will Golden and Mike Terry to finish what had commenced earlier last year, Sally stepped into New Monkey Studio in January of 2007, for what would be the final days of recording and mixing; summoning such local music luminaries as Brian Wright, Meiko, Leroy Powell, and Kyler England. When all was said and done, Amarillo was born in just 16 days of recording, but a lifetime's worth of imagery.

Three-time Grammy winner Gavin Lurrsen (Oh Brother Where Art Thou ~ SD, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, etc.) heard the final mixes, just after completing Lucinda Williams' new record, West, and asked to master Amarillo. A finer choice could not have been made.

The set up for the release has grown organically, with numerous local appearances at the Hotel Café and other venues, supporting Patty Griffin, and airplay and college radio flagship KCRW. Accompanying Amarillo's release will be a special national solo summer tour, in the North and South East, with further touring in the Fall with the full band.

In additional to touring and recording, Sally Jaye has written songs for various film and television projects including an end credit title, "Grateful," for the film "If Only," starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Tom Wilkinson, recorded at Abbey Road Studio with the London Symphony Orchestra

This is the album I've waited years for. Finally a female country artist that can line up toe to toe with the all time greats. She straddles the line between old time country and new Americana with beauty and grace. This House stands out as the strongest tune on a record fileld with great music. You will not regret buying this album!

  • Outstanding

We had a chance to see Sally Jaye at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta. Her performance was outstanding. Her songs are well written, emotional songs that show the depth of her talent. Her voice is beautifully unique. "Amarillo" is an excellent album which we'll listen to for a long time to come!

An instant classic, and will make a grown man cry.

  • Amarillo, an exposé of wonder, dolor and hope
    author: Randy Simcox

Sally Jaye, with her first folk/country release, has really reached into her roots and soul to pull out lyrics and harmonies that remind us all of our own cobwebs and heartaches. She can take you back to a time when a country fair or a magic show was a twinkle in a childs eyes, or up to a darkened rooftop littered with needles, harlots and dispair. If you ever have the chance to see her perform live do yourself a favor and book it. If not, this CD captures a spirit not often heard in a first effort. Bravo. Let's hope more songs are on the way.

  • your influences show through

first time listening to Sally but it is immediately evident that she is more than just a reflection of all of the great singers and songwriters that she has cited as being influences. beautiful music and a sincere southern tone. as soon as I heard her sing I thought, here is this generation's answer to Nanci Griffith. I just listened to "This House" and confirmed it. thank you for sharing your great gift Sally.

  • 10 strong original compositions

Colourful Americana, independent, certainly more interesting than Nashville. Sally Jaye has a wonderful voice, and she obviously works with talented musicians. Sounds like she has been a s/s for a very long time; the conviction is just there. Also, the lyrics make sense.

Amarillo is BRILLIANT! A classic country/ folk style that has a contemporary sound. Sally’s lyrics have strong imagery and beautiful poetic flow, there are many songs on this album that could easily be radio singles. The quality of recording and mixing really highlights Sally’s voice and the way that the guitar is drifting behind it, pulls this ensemble together to make a clean, laid back southern feel. It was a long wait, but well worth it! Well done!

  • Sally Jaye's Amarillo Has Arrived!
    author: Sam Soofi

I'm so psyched that Amarillo is coming out soon. I'm basing this review mostly on the ten 2 minute previews on CDbaby, which is enough to say this: Sally Jaye has arrived! Her crossover style of country, folk, and indie is sure to take America by storm. She has a gravity in her aura and voice that brings listeners front and center. Once there, she uses her expressive and rich lyrics to transports them to a far away country world. These songs are serious business and command immediate respect due to her articulate and powerful voice. The excellence of the production (recording, mixing, engineering) of this album is also apparent - the result of being placed in hands of industry experts and pros. Sally's the total package, people! This starlet is sure to continue to have a break-through year and more to come. -LMR
