Album Notes

Salty Walt’s arrangements are aimed at accurately recreating the historical presentation of maritime music, while finding new ways to make the tradition relevant and alive to modern audiences. Their sets are a mixture of modern sea songs, traditional work songs, forebitters, and the occasional outlandish parody, and tonally encompass a range that runs from haunting despair to jovial irreverence.

Walt himself has worked as an educator on board ships and at museums, including Historic Richmondtown, Conference House, and SF Maritime. He has performed at events ranging from workshops at the Mystic Sea Music Festival to Burning Man cabarets, and spends much of his free time digging through books and albums (and writing to a few of the performers above) looking for lost gems of sea music.

This is seamusic as you might have heard it standing by the mizzen pinrail, or walking into the fo'c'sle companionway during the dog watch. There is brine in their voices, and tar on their hands -- you can just hear it. Full-throated, tuneful singing of a classic set of sailor songs, from the iconic "Blow the Man Down" to the bloody "Jolly Bold Robber". If you can't catch Salty Walt and crew live when they're in port, this is the next best thing.

This is sea music as it might have been sung straight out of the fo'c'sle. There's brine in the Ratlin's voices, and tar on the hands playing the tunes; you can just hear it. Full-throated, tuneful singing on a set of classic songs. From the iconic "Blow The Man Down" to the powerful "Jolly Bold Robber", the songs cover centuries of seafaring. I really enjoy this CD. I prefer my sea chanteys sung by men who sound like they are enjoying themselves and this recording is a fine example of that. It only gets better on repeated listening. The voices of the singers don't sound overly processed and yet are rich and lush-- and you can understand every word. I also appreciate that the arrangements are natural and uncontrived, and yet not simple. Listening to this, I can almost imagine I've been lucky enough to be invited to listen in on a group of highly talented friends singing together for their own amusement. Well worth owning!
