When you first see a Tapir you may think that a pig and an elephant hooked up, and this is the weirdly wonderous offspring. SAMENAME is just that. 2 creative creatures forming one unique project ... without the hooking up of course.
It all started in the unlikely world of cubicle life, where Luke Atencio and Luke Flowers first met. Yes, below those life sucking flourescent lights, something was being orchestrated that would "break outside the box". Besides both being artists/designers for Young Life (younglife.org) where they toiled in their cubes, the two shared an interest in making music that was eclectic. Of course there was also the Tapir toy and a website filled with random tapir facts that really got the 2 talking and sharing common interest. Then when Luke F. turned Luke A. on to some of his favorite artists, like Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, Radiohead, Postal Service, the list goes on to long ... and Luke A. turned Luke F. on to the powerful world of film scores and his endless knowledge of classic vinyl albums, the result was a vision to make music that was a little bit of both worlds. They wanted to find a way to unify their two sounds (Luke A's hip hop/composer background and Luke F's acoustic/folk background) into one new sound.
At the time Luke Atencio was working on his SIGN LANGUAGE project ( hip hop band) and moonlighting as a film score composer. Luke Flowers was performing solo, and working on a his first studio album "Sweet Recovery". During the recording of "Sweet Recovery" at The Bluesweats Lab, Luke Atencio's home based studio, the groundwork for SAMENAME began to take shape. They worked with a few songs that weren't included on "Sweet Recovery", plus a few of Luke Atencios original scores, and some covers that Luke A. had been tossing around. Over the next year the tracks were completed, but sadly the album sat on the shelf for a few years while the Luke's worked on other projects. However, the dream of releasing the album and performing together was always on the horizon.
So After 3 years the album is finally seeing the light of day, and SAMENAME is peforming and working on new material (several albums worth) planned to be released over the next few years.
A tapir toy, a website filled with facts, and sharing the same name ...
sometimes that is all it takes to break outside the box.
