Sam Rivers is best known for his improvisational abilities, by most jazz enthusiasts. The critics have been at a loss when trying to find a genre that encompasses Sam’s talent. Most often, avant-garde is used with respect to his improvisation, but that fails to capture the magic and mastery of composition, and ability that aids in his outstanding improvisations.
More than music, it’s a performance by three multi-instrumentalists filling the air with sound that hinges on communication, orchestration, and an essence of life. This CD features Sam Rivers on soprano and tenor sax, flute, and piano. Doug Mathews is playing electric bass guitar, concert bass violin, and clarinet. Anthony Cole, internationally recognized for his percussive explorations, also exhibits a command of the piano and saxophone.
The compositions on this CD are selected from live performances that took place in New York. It was produced to create the feel of an evening with the TRIO. After listening to it several times, FIRESTORM, was the only word that encompassed the power of the music.
