Rockin' Gospel!
author: Roosevelt
This CD reminds me of the Jesus music of the early 70's. Hard rockin', strong Gospel lyrics and good singing to boot. My favorites are Dangerous, Open Arms, Ain't No Condemnation, and the instrumentals (remember those?) Highlands of Heaven & Good Time Gospel Boogie. Samuel David is a vetran musician and a breath of fresh air at the same time. Good Stuff!!!!

strong southern-rock-styled musical mix with straightforward Christian emphasis

This CD features excellent production values and strong performances from guitarist/vocalist Erwin and a host of top-flight Nashville players and singers. It's rare to find a record -- let alone an independent one -- that combines such edifying and inspiring lyrical content with such hard-hitting and groove-oriented music. Christian rock can so often sound like white bread, but this is the deep-fried hush puppy variety, blending all manner of funky Southern musical influences. You'll catch whiffs of Texas, Muscle Shoals, Atlanta, Memphis and more, as well as some uptown jazz and an almost Spanish flavor to the disc's milder offerings. The title track will set you on fire, and Erwin makes room for a playful spirit as well inviting the Spirit of God throughout, making for a well-rounded record. If God is indeed a Boogie Man, as Joni Mitchell sang on her Mingus album, He'll be boogieing to this.

The first track on Dangerous is a prelude, a wall of sound entitled "Valley of the Man Kings" that bubbles up and finally explodes into the first proper song on the album, the frenetic classic rock jam from which this Christian themed record takes its name. Bending guitar notes along with the stereotypes we may associate with gospel rock, the result is a refreshing take on spiritual enlightenment through music. Far from preachy, the tunes are intelligent and informative, both lyrically and musically. Extremely versatile with the guitar, David is happy to sit back and ride a bluesy groove, but when it's time to step up and wail out a solo, he can make the strings scream beautifully. Clearly a labor of love, there is no doubt that a great deal of time and effort went into the recording of this album. Listen to the sincerity in the playing and the vocals and it becomes obvious that this is a man whose life is full of dedication.
