Album Notes

The Sankofa Ensemble was conceived by Paul Schauert, a master Ghanaian drummer, and jazz composer/musician. His music fuses the complex polyrhythms, and lyrical melodies of West Africa with jazz harmony, instrumentation and improv. The group features a four-piece percussion ensemble along with an acoustic bass, piano, and saxes. His music has been featured on several Ghanaian radio broadcasts, and has received overwhelmingly positive responses from both Ghanaian and American audiences. Paul has spent the last ten years researching Ghanaian music, both by studying in the U.S. with master musicians and working in Ghana. He is currently a graduate student at Indiana University working on his Ph.D. in ethnomusicology. Several musicians featured on this CD were members of the Grammy Award winning One O'Clock jazz band at the University of North Texas.

author: CD Baby
Inspired and driven by the qualities and rhythms of West African music, namely that of Ghana, The Sankofa Ensemble delves deeply into the complex textures while meeting rhythmic brilliacne with harmonic and melodic ingenuity. Fitting well within the context of "Afro-jazz," Hybridity goes way beyond the idea of pairing up two different musical worlds and in turn, cultivates a distinctive and well-balanced fusion of moods, colors and atmospheres which complement each other beautifully. Having been featured on several Ghanaian radio broadcasts, and with overwhelmingly positive responses from both Ghanaian and American audiences, this notable ensemble, powered and conceived by Paul Schauert, master drummer, raises the bar on world jazz fusion by leaps and bounds.
