Recorded in early 2005, “beyond infinity” is the result of some restless nights that musician Sara (Miraz and Sara, Blast Away) was going through. “ My mind just would not keep quite. There was so much going on in my life that I found it therapeutic to just play and record before going to bed and sleep with the recording playing through the night.” Recalls Sara.
Recorded using a Korg DSS-1 That partner Gary Miraz (Doucet and Miraz, Tonhenge, Miraz and Paradiso) had programmed back in the late 90’s the sounds themselves were tasking. “the DSS-1” Miraz states, was one the early samplers from the mid 80’s. It was 12 bit and could mix sounds from samples and enhance them with it own synthesized waveforms which could produce some really lush pads. I remember that the samples came from an Ensoniq ESQ1 that I had. I used them before in some older compositions, but Sara took it to a further extreme and used them as they were meant for. After 5 nights or so the album was done. This was not planned though. We gave it to some friends and they all loved it. Sara who is also an accomplished painter as well had a perfect cover for it so the graphics came out and we prepped it as a release.” Miraz says.
The style of “beyond infinity” is reminiscent of some of the early synthesizer ambient music of the late 70’s and early 80’s with minimalism as a standpoint. No other instruments are used and only one overdub (piano) is present on “Movement 5”. The piano being from the DSS-1, which was a sample from Miraz’s Yamaha CP-70, played acoustically. The reverb used is a combo of Timeworks Reverb X and the Korg DSS-1. It was recorded using Steinberg’s Nuendo. Some compression courtesy of Steinberg was used on Movement 2 to decrease the mid range.
