Album Notes

Sara Kamin's powerful voice has been compared to incredible female artists like Jann Arden, Patty Griffin, Adele, India.Arie and Bessie Smith. A regular performer both in Canada and the UK, Kamin has shared the stage with Molly Johnson, Murray McLauchlan, Rik Emmett, Jason Collett, Jill Barber, Jonatha Brooke, Melissa Ferrick and Ember Swift. According to acclaimed Canadian artist Ron Sexsmith, Kamin “has a very natural way with a song and a voice that is lovely and pure.”

A native of Toronto, Kamin picked up a guitar for the first time at the age of 16 and began teaching herself how to play. Serious about honing her musical abilities, she studied voice, guitar, songwriting, music history and theory at the Royal Conservatory of Music. While continuing her work at the Conservatory, Kamin completed her Honours degree (BSc) in Psychology and Sociology at the University of Toronto.

Kamin co-produced her debut EP, In Her Own Time, with producer Carlin Nicholson (Zeus, The Golden Dogs) in 2001. The song “Mary” went on to win Kamin an award in the 2002 John Lennon International Songwriting competition. The final determinations in this prestigious international songwriting contest were made by the diverse Executive Committee, which included, among others, such notable artists as Bjork, Mary J. Blige, the Foo Fighters, Carlos Santana, James Brown, Elton John and Ben Harper. In 2004, Kamin released her sophomore CD, Somewhere In Between. The album showcases Kamin’s incredible range and diversity as a singer and songwriter.

Kamin's interest in psychology and love of performance led her to pursue a Masters degree (MSc) in Performance Psychology at the University of Edinburgh. Upon completion of her degree in 2005, Kamin began lecturing to undergraduate students in Performance Psychology at the University. She has conducted groundbreaking research in the field, had several of her articles published in books and journals, and given presentations at international academic conferences. Her successful academic pursuits have led Kamin to her current career as a college professor, researcher, writer and performance consultant. In 2009, she joined the faculty at SongStudio, a one-week workshop for emerging songwriters, which also includes Greig Nori, Steven Page and Ron Sexsmith.

Kamin’s commitment to raising awareness for important social issues through music is reflected in her continuing support of several charitable organizations. Aided by incredible support from fellow musicians and industry professionals, Kamin has organized and been invited to play successful events in support of organizations such as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF/Doctors Without Borders), Dignitas International, SAFER (Social Aid For the Elimination of Rape) and the Red Door Women’s Shelter.

Kamin produced The Music in Me, her long-awaited third album, with engineer Adam Tune (CBC) and accompanying guitarist Oliver Pigott (Canadian Idol Top 12 Finalist). Joined by Pigott (guitar, background vocals) and Lyndell Montgomery (violin), Kamin has created an album of well-crafted, soulful folk-pop tunes exploring love, heartache and the human condition.

Sara Kamin’s “big soulful voice…commands attention” (Kurt Swinghammer).

“Sara sings from the heart with a lovely and soulful voice. Her songs bitter sweet tales of her life. I'm so happy to have found her music.” - Graham Powell (Jann Arden, The Supers)

A power house of a voice and great songwriting

This is an absolutely delightful offering by Toronto singer / songwriter Sara Kamin. The musical arrangements are simply wonderful, the song writing takes the listener on an inspired journey and Sara's voice is powerful: a touch of blues melded with sweet seduction. All the songs are beautifully crafted with my personal favourites being "20 Yellow Roses" ( t'will melt your heart), "By her side" and "That's Where I'd begin". I highly recommend you add this treasure to your music collection.
