In the words of photographer and intellectual Zorianna Zurba, the music of 20-year-old Sara Rodrigues is an "emotional exfoliant imbued with the essentials of early twenty-something experiential crap.”
The accuracy of this statement is indisputable - even after hearing only a sample of the songs on 'leap year' - Sara Rodrigues’ first full-length, set for release in January 2006. Produced by David Porteous and Rob Lamothe, 'leap year' is a deeply affective, emotionally-driven record that brings a much needed intelligence to the world of pop songwriting.
A self-taught pianist and vocalist, Sara’s musical abilities are innate. Her technique is unique and stylistic, and at the core of her sound and her songwriting. Although Sara’s songwriting focuses on her aptitude for crafting clever, radio-ready pop songs with intelligent, challenging lyrics, it is her unique voice that is the most captivating element of her music. Songs like “Everyone But Me” and “Paste” illuminate Sara’s intense ability to communicate emotion, as her solemn yet mellow alto switches from a powerful roar to a delicate whisper on a dime.
Inspired by the likes of more obscure artists, including Wilco, Carissa's Wierd, Rachel's, and singer/songwriters Shannon Wright and Matthew Good, the songs on 'leap year' are as diverse as the sounds of the artists that have inspired them. As a result of strategically incorporating key elements of each of these artists - the darkness of Shannon Wright, the enigmatic nuances of Rachel's and the pop sensibility and lyrical fluidity of Good - Sara Rodrigues has created an album and a sound that is truly her own.

Wonderful

What is Leap Year? No words can begin to describe this symphony of deep emotions, and yes, killer vocals. The lyrics are aglow with beautiful piano melodies that keep us hooked until we have to keep the cd on repeat. Incomparable, Rodrigues sends us trough a journey of her music while at the same time giving each song life like no other.
This truly highlights one of Sara Rodrigues's greatest achievements.
This artist IS original.
And this is what I call music.

Sara Rodrigues is everything I look for in music.

"Sara Rodrigues reminds me of a more raw Sarah Slean, Fiona Apple type. While they're polished and flashy, Rodrigues is more guts and emotions. Her voice is powerfully vulnerable [...] strong, yet [...] pleading, almost hurt at times. Sara Rodrigues is everything I look for in music. Those who like smart, emotional piano-based music need to check her out." [March 20, 2006]

Catchy, charming, and seductive. Beautiful album.
author: Lilian Hoang
Catchy, charming, and seductive were the first three words that became apparent to this listener upon hearing Leap Year. Leap Year manages to capture a fresh and oddly thoughtful blend in a beautifully cohesive package. The intrigue of the lyrics lies in the dramatically skewed view on regular situations; the raw emotion translated in Rodrigues’ smoky voice heightens every word sung. The clear melodies and quirky rhythms give a tantalizing product that demands attention. This is definitely not a regular artist- each song communicates a different facet of the artist but easily represents the same person. It is difficult to be reflective but forward moving, but Leap Year achieves this feat. Leap Year is accessible and unpretentious without being simple. Leap Year is a brilliant achievement from Sara Rodrigues. Key songs: Leap Year, Subjective, and Used.
