notes

The Twin Ports folk singer picks up the torch carried by the balladeers of decades past: Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, and Peter, Paul, and Mary.

Her themes are familiar-peace, love, freedom, social justice, and-dare we say it?-saving the world.

That stuff became fodder for jokes at Republican cocktail parties decades ago, but cynicism can't touch Ms. Thomsen. Her music is simply too beautiful.

Even when she skirts the edges of cliché by getting too issue-specific--anti-war and anti-nuke lyrics--she carries it through.

Her voice is lovely yet strong, held aloft by her faith and conviction.

She's everyone's guide and mother, a goddess who, instead of teetering on a pedestal, stands before you in blue jeans and looks you in the eye.

She could make Conan the Barbarian drop his sword and collapse blubbering.

Say what you will about the practicality of her vision, it's the light we all head for, even though we have no idea when we'll finally arrive.

Sarah Thompson has an exquisite vocal quality and an ability to write music that speaks to me. I listen to both of her CD's. I was first drawn to Fertile Ground her first CD, and I find her second, By Breath to be so very attractive that I will be waiting impatiently for for the third.

I can't stop listening to this CD, especially the last two tracks, Turning of the World and May the Long Time Sun. Sara has a spiritual edge to her that's freshing and moving. If you like women folk singers, you will LOVE this cd.

  • Sara is a mystic of the ordinary
    author: Hildegard 2002

This CD was a like finding a treasure in a field. I'd heard the song "By Breath" and searched for the album. Her voice is clear and strong. You feel as if she's right in the room with you. When I saw she was in the tradition of Holly Near, I knew I would be at home with her music. I beleive Sara's music reflects the mysticism of the ordinary in the misdst of our broken world.

  • Very enjoyable!

A beautiful voice, A voice of sanity in this insane world.

  • author: Joanne

Sara Thomsen captures the essence of all that is gentle and beautiful. When I listen to her CD, the cares of my world simply melt away. With a powerful, yet lyrical alto voice she sings of peace, salvation, and the human condition. I especially love the title song, "By Breath" and "Irene Marguerite." I highly recommend both of Sara's CDs, and pray a third one will be released soon.

Though discovering the work of Sara Thomsen by chance...it has been no mistake that I was meant to encounter the talent of this artist. The soul-ful manner in which her lyrics enter the ear they also enter the heart. Excellent for use within women's sacred circles for retreat or gathering. The words of [by breath] seep deeply into the spirit!

  • Music my heart was hungry for

I've been searching for music about peace, connectedness, and spirit and this CD is it!! So powerful and incredibly beautiful. Thank you so much!!

  • just a really spiritually beautiful collection
    author: Mark M.

None of the songs in this album were as great or beautiful as "DarknessCover Me" or "Is It For Freedom?" but the whole album is better than Fertile Ground in that it is just so pleasant to listen to as you are doing whatever you need to do. The songs are so "nice" you cannot help feeling part of the flow of life when they percolate through your consciousness. I really like this album!

  • A balm for these difficult days
    author: Susan

I bought this CD because "fertile ground" wasn't available. To my surprise, I like "By Breath" even more--it is touching, beautiful, and relevant to our daily lives and values. I am so happy to know about Sara and her lovely voice, words, and guitar playing.

  • I have a friend heading to heaven soon and the Irene song is oh so perfect!
    author: Debara

The songs are blended together so harmoniously. The voice lifts me up and then joins in me in despair. Yet the tone is one of hope and reality. We all are taking that journey one day but how grand to imagine the loveliness of those angels lifting us onward!

  • She keeps getting BETTER !!!
    author: Lisa

Wonderful songs, Iplay it over and over again ! I especially like the title track and "Turning of the World" and "May the Longtime Song".

  • Your music touches me deeply...
    author: Chandra

I've only had the opportunity to listen to most of the songs (though I've replayed By Breath to the point that I sing right along with you.) The spirit and force of love that comes through moves me. Inspires me to put my own poetry to music. Thank you for extending yourself into the atmosphere via your heart and your music and touching this soul in Ohio.
