Album Notes

Sativa Gumbo is a four-piece (Piano, Bass, Drums, and Guitar) jam band based in Southern Indiana. SG has been playing in the Louisville, Kentucky area since 1997 and frequently appears at The Bluegrass Brewing Company, HEADLINERS Music Hall (www.headlinersmusic.com), Longshot Tavern, and Gerstle's Place (www.gerstles.com).
SG has also played in Bloomington, IN; Battle Creek, MI; Cincinnati and Columbus, OH; and Lexington, KY. SG's music is an eclectic blend of funk, southern rock, bluegrass, reggae, jazz, rhythm & blues, and follows the great tradition of jam bands in twisting and bending musical genres.
SG has developed a substantial following in the Louisville area by continually providing an amazing live music experience to their fans. SG's live recordings are widely circulated among tapers and live music lovers and provide an intimate glimpse at what SG does best .
SG's second independently produced and released CD "Spread Your Wings" shows off the band's talent in the studio and has received great reviews from the Louisville press. "Spread Your Wings" follows the release of "we've only just begun" in 2002 which featured 73 minutes of LIVE GUMBO for your listening pleasure. Both CDs are available at www.cdbaby.com.
The March 2002 edition of the Louisville Music News (www.louisvillemusicnews.com) featured Sativa Gumbo on the cover and included a three page article on SG. SG was also featured on The Grateful Web (www.gratefulweb.net) as the band of the month for March 2002.
A raucous blend of Bill Payne and Dr. John inspired piano/organ-playing mixes well with guitar licks reminiscent of Duane Allman and Carlos Santana. The guitar and keys float on the rhythm section, which is led by the genetic anomaly of Vic Wooten and Mike Gordon's bass child and founded on rhythms inspired by Billy Cobham and Carter Beauford.
The four diverse songwriters and singers in this band allow SG to transcend traditional music genres, leaving the listener failing to find an adequate way to describe their music.
SG comes fully equipped with their own PA (if necessary), a play list of over 125 original songs, a dedicated following, a groove you'll shake your ass to, and a live performance that will have you asking for seconds.

YEEHAW! Blending funk, southern rock, bluegrass, reggae, rhythm and blues, and jam bands, this groove will shoot the heat of the sun into your bones and make the beers crawl out of the fridge and into your hands! Be advised to listen to this CD only when you don't have to be anywhere soon, as it will remind you of the simple good things in life that can't be beat! Got beer?

You're in a convertible with Beverly D'Angelo. The top is down and you're cruising some highway out in the middle of nowhere, having a great time. Excellent driving music is playing. It gradually dawns on you that while the song reminds you of "Good Morning Starshine," it is not that song. You suddenly realize you're not in the film version of Hair and you're feeling just about good enough to be blown away by "Strong Winds." You're in a car, rec room, basement, bedroom, wherever, and you're listening to the debut CD of New Albany, Indiana's Sativa Gumbo. This jamming and progressive band consists of bassist Jared Williamson, guitarist Tommy Potts, keysmaster Ryan Pickhardt, and Shawn "I'm Not the Manager" Williams on skins. As "The Gorge" begins, you might think of "Tempted," by Squeeze, but that suspicious organ tells you otherwise. These guys change tempos and styles on a dime and this song runs through a few different sections, a couple of which get repeated. Sometimes they pause somewhere (anywhere?) during a song and just when you wonder what's next, they pick up where they left off and keep going, maybe sticking to the basic song but with some sort of twist. Of course, not all of the songs are so multifaceted. "Preacher's Son" has fewer tricks up its sleeve and but is uplifting. Let it play, let it flow over you and see if you can keep from smiling. It's like a dose of musical sunshine. Sound confusing? Don't try to understand. It works and it's fun. This is an outstanding debut CD. And remember, it is a recording of the band playing live, which they ought to be doing more often.
