Album Notes

Satya Graha (SAH-TEE-YAH GRAH-HA)
sanskrit for: "a force of truth and love."

"Distinctly Graha"

Goffin and King. Taupin and John. Richards and Jagger. When lyrics and music meet to create a sound so original and timeless, these forefathers are the alchemists. Vella and Mayes of Satya Graha are no exception. Since the pair started writing 5 years ago, they have penned more than a hundred songs layered with soul, intellect and melody. The acoustic guitar prowess of David Vella has some asking Graha if they are folk, if they are rock, or if they are jazz. "B.B. Mayes' lyrics are stories and the music is the vehicle by which those stories get told," replies Vella. "There are many styles of music that influence me, any number of which could go into one of my songs. So yes, the vehicle might be jazz influenced, or it might be folk or rock for that matter. I am not concerned with labels. I am concerned with whether or not I have written a song that challenges the listener and stands the test of time. I believe these qualities make our sound distinctly Graha."

"Male vs. Female/The Universal Band"

The success of such acts as Fleetwood Mac has to do with not only great songs, but a variety of vocal styles as well. Anna Bensch brings the female perspective to Satya Graha. Jazz trained and rock influenced, Anna belts it with the likes of Nora Jones, Eva Cassidy and Anne Wilson. "You can't help but take notice when this slight, demure, English looking girl opens her mouth" explains Mayes. "Tension and sex appeal. This tug of war, this male versus female give and take between these two remarkable singers is something to behold. I believe it is what makes us a universal band. A band for both sexes."
