Singer-songwriters can be such a tiresome lot. So earnest, so intelligent, so subtle (yawn), so deep...That's why the world needs a Scarth. From the coffeehouses to the clubs, people want to have a little sugar with their medicine. Scarth is all those refined singer-songwriter things, but he ALSO is a performer. Pulling one gem after another from his grab-bag of material-from foot-stomping blues to quirky funk to pretty waltzes and rocking pop music- he keeps things popping from beginning to end.

And then there's the robot. What is that little machine that he bangs on while he's playing his guitar and singing? Sometimes it sits quietly. Sometimes it's a sound effects machine. sometimes it's a sort of funk box-with-an-attitude. sometimes it rebels. it's the perfect straight man for the capricious performer-sometimes upstaging him with its bells and whistles, sometimes supporting with nearly subsonic grace.

So, we didn't have any more room in the car. Prince's attitude took up the whole front seat. David Byrne and Jeff Buckley were talking in the back seat and David was gesticulating dangerously, so Rufus Wainwright and Lyle Lovett climbed in the trunk. We drove over to England and strapped what's left of XTC on the roof, and then set out to seduce the world!
