Album Notes
The Spring Creek Bluegrass Band describes their music as “Rural and Cosmic”. With their roots firmly planted in the tradition of yesterday’s “rural” American music, they are able to explore new musical possibilities to fit the “cosmic” sense of tomorrow. Classic tunes, as well as fresh original music make up their repertoire. Lacking nothing when it comes to ability, this young group sings in three and four part harmony, as well as being finely tuned instrumentalists playing at a level greatly exceeding their years. Jessica Smith, Chris Elliot, Taylor Sims and Alex Johnstone started as friends on a Western Colorado guest ranch in the summer of 2004, and soon became the house band on the ranch, playing three to four nights a week. With a steady performance schedule, it didn’t take them long to realize that they could build a future playing together. Their show became a “must see” experience in the Gunnison/Crested Butte area of Colorado. In the summer of 2005 the band moved to Levelland, Texas to study bluegrass at South Plains College under Alan Munde and Joe Carr, formidable veterans in the industry. Here they created the foundation of their music upon the first generation bluegrass bands reminiscent of Flatt & Scruggs and Jimmy Martin, but also bands like the Beatles, Hot Rize and Country Gazette. Spring Creek uses fundamentals of the tradition to make their own classic, yet contemporary style. In the spring of ’06 they went into the studio to record their first album together full of fresh originals, as well as some traditional tunes uniquely arranged to suit bluegrass fans of all walks.
Since making their home in Lyons, CO( home of the annual RockyGrass Festival) in the summer of ’06, the group has played as the supporting act for some giants of the genre including The James King Band, and the legendary Del McCoury Band. They have also performed at numerous prominent bluegrass and acoustic music venues on the Front Range of Colorado, and been on festival bills with popular names such as Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands, Larry Sparks & the Lonesome Ramblers, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Hot Rize, Rhonda Vincent & the Rage, the Grasscals and many others! Look for this young new group to be headlining at major festivals all around the country in the not-too-distant future!

Spring Creek Bluegrass Band
The best original talent to come along in years. This album/group is destined for greatness.

Not your typical bluegrass
I love bluegrass music, and I've listened to it all my life. But there are times when, after listening to other bluegrass for a few hours, the songs start to feel repetitive and everything sounds like it derives from the same basic hoedown.

Not so with Spring Creek Bluegrass Band.

This is classic bluegrass full of fresh musical twists. Some of the tunes are very, very old and you can feel how the harmonies come from another time. Other songs have modern influences that introduce the fresh surprise of unexpected chord progressions.

Overall, SCBB and Rural and Cosmic Bluegrass is full of magic and charm. I highly recommend it to any bluegrass fan.

Enjoyed this CD. Sounds old & new, a good combination to keep the genre alive & kicking in this pop/rap diluted generation...
