Ed Schaefer’s Outland CD is one of the most remarkable collections of original compositions I have had the privilege of listening to. Decorated with magnificent oboe passages that are both whimsical and lyric, the Outland collection is breathtakingly passionate with thick rich reoccurring themes that underline the oboe’s melodic lines. In particular track three entitled, “The Bay,” is a magnificent piano composition that rivals the thick lushness of Brahms’ symphonies and overcomes the listener with its glorious passages of extraordinary dynamic control keeping them acoustically at bay. While approaching the complexity of some classical sonatas, this work is refreshingly contemporary. From superb oboe, English horn, piano, and guitar passages, found anywhere on this CD, to exhilarating percussive passages that challenge African percussion this work chants volumes of articulate musical mastery.
Kudos Ed, Danielle, and Larry on an astonishingly memorable work!
