Album Notes

Steve Schellenberg is a musician and an astute observer of the human condition. His life long love of Americana and traditional folk music becomes a canvas and each song he creates contains the subtle strokes of a master, whether it’s a robust travelling song or a tale of lost love.

Born in Minnesota, raised in Winnipeg, Steve’s musical roots are deep. From his father’s cowboy songs to his uncle Solli’s hootenannies at Lake Winnipeg, Steve’s childhood was steeped in folk tradition. With the encouragement of a junior high school teacher Steve began playing guitar and writing poetry in grades seven and eight, skills that have been finely honed though life experience.
Steve’s deep commitment to humanitarianism led to years of volunteer work in soup kitchens and shelters across Western Canada. These experiences are reflected in Steve’s writing, not through mere observation, but from the heart of a man who believes one person can make a difference. In a world shrouded in fear and indifference, Steve’s music and quick wit provide a common ground.

With the completion of his third Cd, Runaway, Steve once again proves that content matters. Steve’s finger style guitar is articulate and yet unassuming, filled with qualities that have placed him on stage with the likes of David Essig and Tom Russell. Cleanly and simply recorded with calculated use of mandolin, banjo, and slide guitar, this album creates the intimate and personal experience that is Steve Schellenberg.

REVIEWS

Highly recommended.
author: SING OUT! Magazine
A masterful bubbling cauldron of mostly original songs spanning the American stringband, roof-raising Gospel and rustic country blues styles, performed by a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist from, unexpectedly, western Canada. This very satisfying album is buoyed by the artist's playful spirit, poetic soul and love of roots music. Highly recommended.- SS

A fully realized roots masterpiece
author: Greg Quill
The independent music coming out of Winnipeg, particularly in the roots vein, is of extraordinarily high quality and you need go no farther than songwriter Steve Schellenberg's latest release for proof. While he's very much his own man, the artist he instantly brings to mind is John Sebastian; a similar vocal timbre, a similar playful sense of humour, a similar instinct for unusual melodic construction, a similar lyrical intimacy and humanity, a similar affection for American string band music, gospel and country blues infuse these dozen luminous songs — all originals, with the exception of the traditional pieces "All The Pretty Little Horses," and a couple of old-time jigs — which are built around acoustic guitars, banjos, dobro and mandolin, and are given an additional boost from exceptional fiddle, alto sax, piano, percussion and harmonica embellishment. A fully realized roots masterpiece, Run Away is a testament to the refined talents of a completely self-confident artist who deserves big time exposure in festivals and on concert stages.
