Scott Davis, a native of Des Moines, developed an interest in jazz as a student at Hoover High School. Davis graduated from the University of Northern Iowa where he was active in the award winning UNI Jazz Lab 1 Band and a number of small group musical projects.
Upon graduation Davis returned to Des Moines and started playing regularly with the Don Hoy Orchestra. He also began the Scott Davis Jazz Sextet, which played a number of concerts in downtown Des Moines in the late 70s.
After spending several years with the Des Moines Playhouse Orchestras, Davis joined forces with Ed Kelly to form the variety band, "FreeStyle" in 1985. The group first participated in "Jazz in July" in 1987. The five-piece band continues to specialize in corporate events, weddings and dance parties.
Davis worked with the Des Moines Big Band in the 80s and performed at several Civic Center shows, including engagements with Henry Mancini and The Temptations.
In 1999 he joined the local blues band, "Fat Tuesday and the Greasefire Horns" which won the Iowa Blues Challenge in 2000.
His instrumental jazz CD, "Almost Time" was recorded in August and October, 2001 at Great Plains Recording Studio in Des Moines. Owner Joe Koelling served as engineer and producer. The Scott Davis Jazz Quartet currently has a monthly engagement at the Cosmopolitan Lounge in the Suites at 800 Locust in downtown Des Moines.
