ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
About Scott Downey: Singer/Songwriter/Psychologist/Taekwon-Do Master and Instructor/Husband/Father/Runner/ and Adult with ADHD.

Scott Downey was born in Stephenville Crossing, Newfoundland and went to Assumption High School. He was reared up by Aunt Millie and Uncle Scott who lived “up the brook”. He is left handed and started playing his Uncle Terry’s right handed guitar at the age of seven. The picture below shows him playing on his Uncle Terry’s Gibson guitar (the same one he started playing at age 7). Scott would visit his Uncle Terry’s house everyday to play with his cousin Van. During his visits he would also pick up his Uncle Terry’s guitar. It didn’t take long before he was playing chords (upside down mirror images) and he could play melodies and chords that he heard by ear. As the years went by Scott became good enough to play in the community church band and in local high school bands including a band called Crystal Pyramid. Scott remembers that his first gig was playing at the Assumption High School gym for a “sock hop” and each member of the band received 50 cents each.

After leaving high school Scott went to work in Toronto as a cleaner and lived in the boiler room in an apartment building (his sister was the superintendent of the building at the time and she had her own 1 bedroom apartment. While working and saving some money Scott continued to play guitar and learn cover tunes. His goal was to learn cover tunes and then return to Stephenville Crossing to start up a band.

A year later he did return to Stephenville Crossing and decided to use the same band name “Crystal Pyramid”. The band consisted of Scott on vocals and lead guitar, Carmen Laney on Drums and Sean Russell on Bass guitar and vocals. The band played locally for a few months and then Scott was asked to join another band called “Turok”, who were based in Stephenville. Scott joined the band and then travelled across Newfoundland playing in different clubs and stadiums. While playing at the Thompsons Student Center (TSC) in 1980 he met his wife to be, Cathy Blackwood, and fell in love. Scott decided that the music business was not the best option for financial success or raising a family and decided to quit the band business and focus on getting a higher level of education.

Scott enrolled at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in 1981, became interested in Psychology, and eventually graduated from MUN with a B.Sc (Honors) degree and then a Masters Degree in Psychology from the University of Toronto. Scott has spent the last 22 years working as a Child and Adolescent Psychologist at the Janeway Child Health Center, Taekwon-Do instructor/school owner, and a Psychologist in private practice. In addition he is also an avid runner and a member of the Nautilus Running Club in St. John’s.

During the past 25 years Scott continued to play guitar and spent a lot of time writing his own material. With the advent of new high quality recording technology and the ability to record your own material at a low cost, Scott’s enthusiasm for writing his own songs has exploded and he was able to write and record over 50 songs in less than three months. Of note is the Scott has ADHD (which was not diagnosed until he began working as a Psychologist at the Janeway in 1991). He states that his ADHD has been a “Gift” because his high energy level over the years has allowed him to accomplish many things. At age 51 he continues to have a high level of energy and is now focusing this energy and creativity into writing original songs. His debut CD “Believe” is the culmination of that creativity and energy. The songs on his debut CD include inspirational songs such as “Believe”, Love songs such as “Love of my Life” and “25 Years” and up tempo songs that you can dance to such as “Dance With Me Tonight”, and “You Don’t Know A Thing About Me”. Scott states that he hopes that his original material finds an audience that enjoys his style of music.
