Album Notes

Dois Mundos (Two Worlds) is Scott Feiner’s second CD of his Pandeiro Jazz project
and his first recorded in Brazil for the Biscoito Fino label. This unique, exciting
recording of acoustic jazz features New York born Feiner on the Brazilian pandeiro as
the driving rhythmic force, in place of a traditional drumset.

Feiner released his first recording as a pandeiro player, Pandeiro Jazz, in 2006, which
received worldwide attention for its innovative new sound. The CD was recorded in
New York City with some of the city’s best jazz musicians and after hearing it, the
highly respected pianist Brad Melhdau wrote, "Scott Feiner has created a unique
sonic world on Pandeiro Jazz...full of subtlety and surprise". The CD received 4 stars
in Jornal O Globo and was voted one of the ten best CDs released in Brazil in 2006
by the website MusicNews.

Dois Mundos features Feiner’s Rio de Janeiro based band, comprised of some of
Brazil’s top instrumentalists: trumpeter Jessé Sadoc (Guinga, Lenine); saxophonist
Marcelo Martins (Ivan Lins, Djavan); pianist David Feldman (Leila Pinheiro, Paulo
Moura); and bassist Alberto Continentino (Caetano Veloso, João Donato). This group
has a wonderful rapport together, interpreting five original compositions by Feiner –
Conde, Dois Mundos, 7 na Ciranda, Under the Influence, and Contraste (co-written
with Feldman). They also give a fresh perspective to the Brazilian classics Asa Branca
(Luiz Gonzaga) and Retrato em Branco e Preto (T. Jobim/C. Buarque), as well as the
American standards All of You (Cole Porter) and Monk’s Dream (Thelonius Monk).
The format ranges from intimate pandeiro/piano duos to trio, quartet and quintet
settings. The CD was recorded live in the studio, which is made apparent by the deep
level of musical communication and interaction between the musicians.

Feiner has developed a highly personal voice on the pandeiro, using it not only to
create strong rhythmic grooves, but also to play melodically and interact musically
with the soloists in his group. While most people assume that an American pandeiro
player must originally have been a drummer, Feiner was actually an accomplished
jazz guitarist before dedicating himself to the pandeiro. He came to Rio de Janeiro in
2001, and after a few years of developing his pandeiro playing in the Lapa samba
and choro scene, found a way to join his two musical worlds – jazz and pandeiro.
Dois Mundos is the next step in Scott Feiner’s unique musical journey.

— Antonio Carlos Miguel, O Globo
