California Mandolin Maniac Scott Gates Receives Rave Reviews

Dubbed "Bluegrass Boy" in a 2002 interview in the High Desert's Daily Press, The Apple Valley's own mandolin maniac Scott Gates has released his first CD, Legacy. Scott dedicates his CD to his grandfather, Marco Manzo, for imparting to him the Legacy of the mandolin. At 12 years old, Scott has arranged a recording of bluegrass standards, swing tunes, and an Old Country Italian lullaby, along with lots of hot-pickin' well past the expectations of a pre-teen player.

Highly regarded mandolin web-site MandoZine.Com says, "This is a great recording...Scott has great technique and tone, and plays beyond his years." Scott Tichenor of MandolinCafe.Com writes"...a student of mandolin legend Evan Marshall, and one of the rising young stars in the mandolin world." Bluegrass Breakdown's Brenda
"Golden Ear" Hough reviewed Legacy stating "...one of Scott's mandolin idols is Chris Thile (mandolinist, The Nickel Creek Band, Sugar Hill Records) and it will be interesting to see how the paths of these two mandolinists develop in the coming years, hopefully someday we'll see them playing together on a duo album! American Idols, indeed!"

Gates was able to obtain top players in the bluegrass world to accompany him on the CD, which features Hesperia, CA recording engineer and member of the esteemed Lost Highway Bluegrass Band, Eric Uglum.

Scott would like to thank ELIXIR Strings and Michael Lewis Instruments for their much appreciated support.

A great CD from a future star
author: mandolin fan
Was lucky enough to catch this young man at a local venue in California with an adult band, all grown up players of renown. Scott was the band leader and the play was awesome. The music and vocals coming from someone so young is truly amazing. This CD is going to be a valued treaure for collectors in the years to come. A hearty endorsement of both this piece of music as well as the artist. Do not miss out on this wonderful CD project. He played Jazz, Bluegrass and even a classical piece all with flair, emotion and beutiful soul. Must admit, i was dazzled.

A breath of musical fresh air from a brilliant young musician!
author: Mandolin Lover
This CD is a delightful mix of hot picking combined with soulful playing. Scott has a feel for what he is playing and can truly read the songwriters intentions and make them his own. Favorite cuts are the medley of Foggy Mountain Special and Lady Be Good, Dusty Boots is a wonderful new tune written by Scott and his dad with a nod to our cowboy past. The great musicians he has playing with him would not waste their time on anyone who is not a winner! Scott Gates is a winner and we are going to be seeing him around for a long time to come as he evolves into his own skin and finds out his passions. I am glad to follow him for the musical ride.

What a talent! This kid is destined to great things and maybe, the Opry!
author: Bluegrass fan
What an introductory project! His picking reminds you of a young Chris Thile but tends toward a more broad sampling of musical styles than Chris attempted at this age. Great back up players and a really nice touch to these pieces. We have heard the songs before but Scott makes them all sound fresh and new. Wonderful CD, highly recommended and definitely one for the collection. Get this one, they will be a sought after collectable some day, this kid has got it!
