Album Notes

Scottinho (a.k.a. Scott Anderson) is a New York based guitarist, composer and vocalist, and Batizado is his first solo release. Born and raised in Minnesota, but possessing a Brazilian heart, Scottinho has been playing Brazilian music for many years. He started by playing Brazilian jazz standards while studying jazz music formally, and continued through leading his own band in Chicago and New York. His journey through music has taken him from playing at the Taste of Chicago 2000, to a tremendous opportunity to meet and record with great Brazilian guitarist Toninho Horta.

Batizado means baptism and according to Scottinho, represents a period of trials, initiations and the beginning of his journey through capoeira, a Brazilian martial-art form. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to Dreams Can Be, a non-profit organization in Rio de Janeiro that raises money for homeless and impoverished children living on the streets of Brazil.

A wide variety of stylistic influences appear on Scottinho's Batizado. The title track is a funky samba in the style of many MPB greats like Marisa Monte and Gal Costa. Sao Francisco is a beautiful bossa nova, while African Children's Song features a field-type recording of an actual Ghanaian children's game. Melting of the Snow is a powerful ballad with a slowed Brazilian guitar rhythm, alt-country type lyrics and electronica sound effects. Sereia is reminiscent of Afro-Bahian artists like Caetano Veloso, while Toninho actually features its namesake, Toninho Horta.

The CD was recorded in Brazil and Chicago and features performances by Toninho Horta, Bobby Broom, Paulinho Garcia, Juarez Moreira and Grazyna Auguscik, among others.
