Scott King is easily one of the most accomplished guitarists on the singer-songwriter circuit today, with stunning fretwork reminiscent of Bruce Cockburn. Like U2's Bono, he sings with dynamic range in an alternatingly tender and powerful voice that is uniquely his own. With a lyrical depth that rivals the best songwriters of his generation and tunes that hook you with the first notes, King has built a bridge that once and for all joins the finest folk with the candiest pop.
King's discography begins with Xguru's Wonder Of It All(1999) produced by Tim O'Heir (Sebadoe, Julianna Hatfield). After moving to Maine, King released his debut solo album, The Thomaston Sessions, in May of 2004. A stark contrast to the electronically-heavy production of Wonder Of It All, The Thomaston Sessions is an acoustic showcase for King's exceptional guitar technique, melodic choruses, and poignant lyrics.
Now, with King's latest album, we have it all. Portrait is an imaginative, rootsy potpourri of several different genres, from contemporary folk, to quirky jazz, to alternative country, to pop-rock, to his characteristic, contemplative rock ballad. "In My Garden" is an energetic opening to this album, and sets the stage for the introspective, moody, personal title-track, "Portrait." The haunting, almost lonely quality provided by the horn in "Rain, Rain, Rain" not only gives it soul but reflects a sense of desperation in the speaker's voice in spite of the assurance that "everything will be all right."
These are just a few of the treats found on Portrait which explores everything from true love to biblical irony. One reviewer called it, "A treasure. Insightful, introspective, thoughtful, soulful." Scott King's latest album is a moving demonstration and celebration of his exceptional creativity and versatility as a songwriter.
